Post by: Athos on May 10, 2013, 09:36:44 AM
Hello all,
thanks for welcoming me on the forum. I'd like to share with you my last production, the ICM Mig 3 in winter camo. Hope you'd like it...

No I don't like it.
I love it. :D
The white paint gives a good reference and it looks indeed painted on like the real aircraft.
Is this done with the hairspraytechnique?

Very nice work! The paint looks great and the setting is wonderful.

Hello everyone and thanks to you, Jonbius & B-realistic,
here are some explanations about how I did it:

first a coat of Tamiya grey primer then a layer of Rubn'buff on the metallic parts:

(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/873390DSC864201.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=873390DSC864201.jpg)
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/882613DSC864801.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=882613DSC864801.jpg)

When the rub is dry, I give a spray of the AMT colors on the under & uppersurfaces. Usually I used Akan paints but this time I tried my own Tamiya mixes.

(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/849062DSC865501.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=849062DSC865501.jpg)

Then I scratch the surfaces where it is supposed to be used

(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/658379DSC866001.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=658379DSC866001.jpg)

(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/496875DSC866201.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=496875DSC866201.jpg)

the undersufaces get some weathering. A coat of "KLIR" or varnish will protect the whole.

(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/369426DSC867901.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=369426DSC867901.jpg)

Then the uppersurfaces receive a very thin coat of Tam flat white which is softly and delicately sanded (at the strategic places)with 600 sand paper

the red stars are painted (Montex masks) and a final weathering is made:

Thanks for the explanation.
I've got something similar as Rub 'n Buff.
I'm going to use that on my Mig-19PM I'm working on.
I think that it's more realistic finish then Alclad II.

Hi Athos,
interesting model indeed. The choice to show and improve the internal details gives much value to the model.

Massimo

Brilliant MiG-3, Athos!  One of the reason I like VVS (and Axis Eastern Front) aircraft is I've always loved the winter finishes.
