Imagine cramming a gun (and its ammunition load) of that size into the Yak-9K! Even the empty shell casings falling onto an unprotected person at ground level would create some risk of injury... ;)
John Title: Re: Aircraft Weapons Shells Post by: learstang on December 05, 2011, 01:24:02 AM I think it's interesting how much bigger the VYa 23mm shell is than the ShVAK 20mm shell. I actually have a VYa spent cartridge and it is large; although it couldn't penetrate frontal armour on any tanks, it proved quite effective against lightly armoured and unarmoured vehicles such as armoured personnel carriers and trucks. Its effect on German soldiers can well be imagined.
It is amazing that the Yak-9K could carry that huge 45mm cannon - I find it amazing it even carried the 37mm. Regards, Jason |
