Title: I-7 (HD-37) images?
Post by: herbarnold99 on December 17, 2011, 04:25:18 AM
Hi, I'm looking for photos/drawings of the I-7/Heinkel HD-37, hopefully in operational markings. Realize there may not be much out there, and have vacuumed up what I could from Google images. Any leads appreciated!

Cheers,
Herb

Thanks John! There were a couple new ones in there, I appreciate it! I just don't think I'm ever going to find much, this subject is the definition of obscurity...

Cheers,
Herb

I have to admit that's one I hadn't seen before.  Still, it does just scream "Heinkel", doesn't it?  Herb, is there a model for this (I love obscure subjects also, especially Soviet ones)?

Regards,

Jason

Well. you're in luck (although, as they say, "There are two kinds of luck") - there was a Prop&Jet vacuform, a few years ago; some hard searching might turn one up somewhere depending on how badly you want it:

Thank you John!  I'll have to put that one my "maybe one day" list; quite a very long list.  Maybe Musa has one rattling around somewhere, although to be honest I'd rather get his I-14 (maybe if I get a little money for Christmas!).

Regards,

Jason

Page based on 1994 Krila Rodiny text by I. Sultanov at http://alternathistory.org.ua/istrebitel-i-7-neozhidannyi-prishelets

Poor photos, drawings should be reliable (Sultanov illustrated Shavrov?s books)

Nice reference material, Konstantin - thank you!  It does look a bit like an Arado 65, but I suppose it's the BMW engine (it looks like a BMW).

1929 Heinkel HD-43.  It was a design similar to HD-37, but incorporated modifications requested by the Soviets.  Eventually it was rejected.  Some of the modifications (like headrest) were included in I-7.

131 I-7s produced are not a small number for early 1930es.  For comparison, only 151 P-26s were made.  For Soviet aviation industry I-7 was an important step forward:   already in 1928 Polikarpov used Heinkel's calculation methods in U-2 (later Po-2) wing design.  Some may also recognize Heinkel's influence on later I-5...  I-7 was the first Soviet plane with welded steel frame fuselage - similar design will be used in later Yakovlev designs...

Cheers,
KL

Well, glad the topic generated some interest! I do have the Prop & Jet vacform, and it is very nice. Some of the most delicate surface detail I've come across, especially for a vac. Thanks to everyone for providing all the images!

Cheers,
Herb
