Title: UM Pe-2 series 87 In box preview
Post by: nsmekanik on March 21, 2012, 07:02:30 AM
This is UM's Pe-2 series 87 Kit. The kit comes in a sturdy box top opening box

Although the box is a bit larger then it needs to be, the parts, are sealed in a single bag and they don't rattle around to much. While the clear sprue is not in it's own bag, the decals and photo etch fret are in their own bag which is in turn sealed in the bag with the rest of the sprues

And here are the obligatory separate sprue shots  ;D

One of the wing half's did break off the sprue

(http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b218/nsmekanik/UM%20Pe-2%20series%2087/IMG_0263.jpg) X2

As you can see in the instructions the kit supplies the parts to make I think most any version, including the skies, the only difference between the different boxings is the decals and instruction sheet.

While the instructions look to be fairly good and easy to follow for the most part, it looks like there maybe some less then clear parts placement, such as the dive breaks, as there nothing on the wings to indicate placement for these

However they do supply a correction in this particular boxing.

There are two decal options, one being White 1 from 205 BAP 1943

and the other simply White 5 from the autumn 1942

While there is a bit of flash on some of the parts, some sink holes in a few of the thicker pieces, and some ejector pin marks in the interior that won't be that easy to clean up, all in all it looks to be a fairly nice kit and not to difficult to put together. The only real let down is that the upper canopy is very thick on the exposed rear portion, which is a bit surprising as the rest of the clear parts, while not of the greatest quality, are really not that bad and reasonably thin, and thinner then the main canopy. On the plus side though, the canopy has a portion of the fuselage moulded as a part of it so fitting it won't be that difficult.

The panel lines are also a bit on the wide side, which may bother some, but all in all, not that bad. As I don't have any plans to measure the kit against I can't comment on it's accuracy.

I've built a couple of UM's armour kits and really enjoyed them, and while this kit is not the highest quality of moulding, it is still quit good and should not be a difficult build.

Hi Nsmechanic,
I've a kit of UM too and I am really pleased for the possibility to build nearly all versions.
A desturbing thing is that the wingtips aren't accurate in shape, being too pointed. Someone suggested to kitbash the kit of vezda for accurate wings. I think that I'll try to correct them without making things too expensive.

Massimo

Hi Massimo, Fortunately I have the H/T model special Pe-2/Pe-3 booklet. It has some drawings in it, but like all things they may be inaccurate, so the usual possibilities exist in making such comparisons. On a quick look, according to my rulers, the drawings are out by +1 inch to the meter in 1/72 scale.  I wouldn't say it is underscale, as some of the proportions do line up with the drawings, but I would say that it is to short in length after the wing root and to short in span. Personaly I think it would be easier to modify the kit wing then to try and make the Itelari/Zvezda wing fit, here you can see where things are out so you can make your own mind.

To qualify things a bit, the fuselage in the pics looks like it matches the drawings better then it does, and the wing is actualy lined up with the wing root joint, but becuase it lifts off of the drawing in the picture it looks like it is overlaping the fuselage, the wing tip is where it should be over the drawing relative to the wing root.

since the whole thing isn't as accurate as would be desirable, I'm just going to build it as is, and live with it, as for the most part, until something better comes along, in my opinion the discrepancies won't be as noticeable as long as it's not in the company of a better kit and at the end of the day it does look very much like a Pe-3. I did try to build the Itelari kit, but in the end I gave it away as there were sink holes, and raised details that got in the way, my rescribing didn't work out very well, and actualy I'm much happier with this kit.

Hi Nsmechanik, I see. I have made similar comparisons some time ago. Perhaps I'll cut away the wing leading edge and reposition it filling the void with plasticard and cyanoacrilate, if I find a way to do this without compromising the panel lines too much.

What's always impressed (and intimidated me) is the interior, which appears to be complete from the nose to the tailwheel, complete with some of the interior framing.  I'm tempted to buy this kit, but I need to finish up my Zvezda/Italeri model first.  I could live with the inaccuracies, if inaccuracies they are (dealing with the IL-2 has made me somewhat distrustful of drawings).

Regards,

Jason

I am going to say that looking at the pictures, and the MPM Pe-2/3 kits, that to my eye the wing is to narrow at the tip, but where the flaw is is another question.
