Title: MiG-3 elevators
Post by: Seawinder on March 09, 2013, 06:36:18 AM
I'm starting a new thread because it's no longer about seatbelts. I've decided to do White 36 of the 401st (I did the numbers on my computer from Massimo's profile and will have them printed by Joseph Osborn of Fireball Modelworks). On the basis of past discussion, I'm not going to paint the nose black.

My question is, which paint, A-19 or AII Z, was used on the elevators? I assume the stabilizers, being metal, were painted with A-19. Am I right in thinking that the elevators, being fabric, were painted AII Z?

Pip

Hi Pip,
I'm looking for the photos in the Finnish musum.
In the meanwhile, I add here a link http://sovietwarplanes.com/board/index.php?topic=67.0 (http://sovietwarplanes.com/board/index.php?topic=67.0) to a past topic remarking a small difference in the shape of elevators and stabilizators. Infortunately it is not fully conclusive. Some measurements of the preserved pieces could give light on this argument.

Massimo

Hi,
http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/colors/1940-1941/1940-41.html (http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/colors/1940-1941/1940-41.html)
strangely, the photos here seem to show the same color on fabric-skinned elevators and metal-skinned stabilizators.

Massimo

Hi Massimo.
I've gone through all the photos in that part of the MiG-3 section, and I'd have to say I can't find any one that's really conclusive. I did see a couple (White 52 for example) where one could almost convince oneself that the elevators were slightly darker. Still have to wonder why they would have painted fabric surfaces with what was designed for metal.
