Anyone have any additional information on this aircraft at all?

I can't read Russian so I am not sure what it says.

Both photo and profile captions are wrong...  :(  Photo says "12th Air Army", profile says "32 iap" (32nd fighter regiment)

Photo and the plane are interesting.  It was one of the early La-5FNs (black + green scheme was extremely rare on La-5FNs).  It belonged to the 32nd giap (32nd guards fighter regiment).

32nd giap received its first La-5FNs in March 1943. Actually, the official VVS La-5FN acceptance/combat tests were done by the 32nd giap.  In late March/early April 1943, regiment was withdrawn from the front and sent to Malino airbase to completely reequip to new La-5F and La-5FN.  First squadron received La-5FNs while remaining two squadrons received La-5Fs.  During this period, from February to April 1943, regiment was commanded by Stalin's son Vasily Stalin.
In early May 1943, regiment was sent back to the combat, to Bryansk Front.

We may assume that your photo was probably taken in April 1943 when regiment was behind the frontline ie. during the training with new La-5FNs.

HTH,
KL

Hi,
on this profile, the shape of the black hemispherical band under the star on the fuselage side is drawn in an unlikely long way.
All Lavochkins had this band much shorter.

Very nice work.
Only, I think that the thin outline of the numbers should be blue. At least, the only known wreck has blue outlines, and they were painted on the line, so I think they all are the same.

Besides the black band on the tail appears more straight and vertical on photos.

Hi Barney,
it looks good in 3D. It is from Il-2 Sturmovik game skin editor?

the wreck is from Poland, the plane was shot down in late 1944 or 1945. The plane must have been made in 1944 and it was finished in gray+dark gray scheme.  In 1944 fuselage numbers were painted in factories and in case of La-5, had outlines.

La-5FN "white 57" was made in early 1943 and painted in different scheme.  In 1943 fuselage numbers were painted in regiments, usually didnt have any outlines.

That does look good in 3D, whatever the outlines should be.  Your friend did an excellent job!

Jason
