Title: AKAN AII Light Blue
Post by: cdk on February 24, 2014, 09:17:46 PM
Hello,

last week I was able to buy some AKAN acyclic paints. One bottle was 73042 AIIr Light Blue. When I airbrushed some of it on a white paper to make a sample to archive it, I was surprised how it looked. It is a light greenish grey, not unlike a mix with Humbrol 87+115+23 I had made for the pre war grey blue as given here in the Colour research section. It is a little lighter as BS381c No 361. No really good FS match.
Now I suppose that I have a ill labeled bottle and the paint is AKAN 77031, the pre war greyblue.

So somebody may have a bottle of AKANs greyblue or AIIr light blue and can give me some comments how these colours will look?

Hi cdk,
After advertising AKAN for years, I have to admit that Akanihin does seem to have problems with "quality control" sometimes.  What you describe and what is on your photos can not be called AII Light Blue.  AII Light Blue shouldn't be greenish or grayish, just light blue.

It is also clear now that Akanihin's wartime and his postwar colours are more reliable interpretations than his prewar colours.  This because he relied on standards for his 1941 and later colours and for prewar colours he had few relics only.  For example, I doubt that "light gray-blue" has been used for undersides of prewar VVS planes.  More likely there was only "light blue".

AMT-7 is an intense sky blue colour, good example is underside of le Bourget Yak-3.
AII Light Blue is light sky blue colour, good example is underside of Vesivehmaa Mig-3 wing.

KL

On my monitor that AKAN colour looks like British Interior Grey-Green!

Thank you for the replies.

Now I think the old mix I have made with Humbrol 89+65 is not bad. On the pic it can be compared to Humbrol 89, AKAN 73042 and FS35190.

Comments are wellcome.

Hi cdk,
since you reffer to FS595 colour deck - there isn't a perfect match for AII Lt Blue...  :)
Following should give you an idea:  closest glossy blue is 15200, but AII lt blue is significantly lighter.  closest matt FS chips are 35466 and 35299, both slightly darker than AII Lt Blue.
There is a bit of green-gray, 35299 pulls in that direction, but blue should be dominant.

Hi CDK,

here http://sovietwarplanes.com/board/index.php?topic=1445.msg10170#msg10170 (http://sovietwarplanes.com/board/index.php?topic=1445.msg10170#msg10170)

are examples of AKAN color a have and already used on my kits, posted here on the different threads:

The difference between AMT-7 and AII Blue is apparent. There is nothing green in AMT-7. I use them as they are (just thinning), I do not mix them with other color for scale effect etc, so you can get quite good idea how they look on the planes.

Hi KL and 66misos,

thanks for the comments. The Fs numbers and AKAN paint samples give me a good impression how AIIr looks. My bottle of AKANs AIIr is definite wrong labeled.

Now I'm try to find a better mix for AIIr.

Best Regard

Claus

Interesting - I just went and checked my bottle of AKAN AII Light Blue, and it's definitely blue, not green. That being said, it's very dark, almost as dark as AKAN AMT-7. It's nothing like the difference between the two colours as shown in the samples by 66misos.

I had similar doubts about AKAN acrylic AE-9, which relates to KL's comment about Akanahin's prewar colours being less accurate than his wartime or postwar ones:

It's helpful to have a couple of FS approximations for AII Blue -- thanks, Konstantin! I've been stockpiling bottles of Model Master 2126 Russian Topside Blue, which, although not a WW2 color at all, still works pretty well OOB IHMO. Sadly, Testors is discontinuing the color.

Cheers,
Pip

Thanks, Pip - I actually have a bottle of MM 2126, so that's that crisis solved!  ;)

Model Master 2126 seems to be extremely close to AII Lightt Blue! According to http://paintfinder.ehaltom.com/paint/Testors-Model-Master-2126-Russian-Topside-Blue/2466 its RGB parametersa are:
Red: 151 Blue: 206 Green: 186

For closest AII Light Blue eqivalent I have:
Red: 141 Blue: 203 Green: 193

Cheers,
KL

Hi,
the color above is AII blue, the one below the MM2126.

If you have not the necessity to preserve the MM2126 unaltered, I suggest to make some small correction with a bit of turquoise directly in the can.
