Massimo,it?s great to see a page dedicated to a Lend-Lease plane in the Research section, great work as always. And a nice surprise to see a picture of a soviet P-40N,these are very very scarse.

This is another photo of "White 65":

My congratulations to Tapani for the excellent profiles, greetings.

Wonderfull I do like the P-40 rusian decorations!
In the first post,  could the 23's tail be silver?

my P-40 project is the Khlobistov's P-40B:

Hi Xan! I have an old Academy kit I've been meaning to finish as Khlobistov's P-40, for a long time. Before the taran, of course!

I don't think. The photo under a cloudy sky shows an uniform color. The photo with horizontal light gives the idea of silver, but the shadow of the wing on the rudder is as dark as expected from a non metallic surface.

It is one of my preferred profiles. I haven't understood if it was unique, or more than one were converted this way.

Hi,
perhaps this is silver. It looks metallic even if the sun is relatively high.

Hi Jason, I have the same kit and I expect to do it after the taran  ;)

Hi Massimo, I agree with you. I wrote that before I saw the pics in your website...

perhaps this is silver. It looks metallic even if the sun is relatively high.
The pics can let think that it is, but all the context around says it isn't.
First there are very few P-40 silver in general (I remenber only brazilians p-40 and a plane with orange nose)
second it's not in VVS tradition at all let planes all in silver in that period)
I would say white...

the P-40 K red 26 is interesting, discusssed here

I?ve seen 2 pictures of Red 26,one of them is this close up:

and this is the other....didn't even know I had it on this machine... Given the contrast on this and it's getting some sun  I'd be inclined to think it was a very thin coat of white, letting teh under colour 'bleed' through.

maybe better seen here, note very hard shadow of pilot, that's direct sunlight, and worn paint above rear windows.  It also seems the wing is still in OD, and the paint is worn thin on the nose.

what is interesting is one of these Massimo linked,
the image is not cropped and a lot better quality
(http://www.photoarchive.spb.ru/getImage.do?object=2523517175&compatible=1&original=1)

note the wheels are on some kind of pad, and that it looks like a ghost of a '26' behind the cockpit

Note on this how the wing does appear the same tone, I think the other photos it may now be in shadow from low sun,  so perhaps this is a winter paint scheme done in aluminium paint after all?
Is that silver overspray at the base of the vertical prop blade?

fascinating when new better photos come up.

Hi, I wonder if the rudder is so due to the angulation, or it was already white before the winter finish.
There is another possibility for white to give the idea of silver: if it is sprayed horizontally, could be that less white reaches the upper surfaces, creating the dark shade that suggests a silver finish. If so, the dark shades should be visible in a photo from above.

Two photos more of that "Za Rodinu" P-40
Leningrad Front, Mar 1943
(http://www.photoarchive.spb.ru/getImage.do?object=2531589664&compatible=1&original=1)

IMHO, that "ghost" number is really indicative:  There was actually a requirement for the MK-7 to be partially transparent so that the original camouflage would be seen through it.  This was hard to achieve when paint was brushed (especially in cold weather), but it could have been achieved when paint was sprayed.
Following photo probably shows this semi-transparent MK-7

Interesting photos.
Plane 26 looks white, because I can't see shining in the shadow zone. Probably it is not uniform white because it is sprayed horizontally. The spinner, or at least its frontal part, looks to have been painted white before the winter finish, as for its rudder.

More likely because of the lighting conditions:  Low sun and reflection from the snow (snow glare or winter glare).  Low sun illuminates fuselage side and snow glare illuminates fuselage underside.  Top of the fuselage remains in "shadow"...

You can see pilot squinting due to snow glare  ;)
