Title: what is a "ZAB" bomb?
Post by: huevans on April 27, 2007, 02:29:49 AM
I've run across some sources for 1/72 Master Club ordnance and 1 of the problems is that MC has unfamiliar types of bomb. I know what a "FAB" bomb is - a general purpose bomb. However, what is a "ZAB" bomb?

As well, MC has a FAB-100 and a FAB-100M. I assume the "M" stands for the usual "modificatny" and is a later variant. Can anyone validate this guess and tell me when the 100M would arrive in service??

Bomb classification is quite simple, really: Name with description, weight in kilogramms, real weight in kilogramms.

~AB - Aviacionnaya bomba

FAB - Fugasnaya (general purpose)
ZAB - Zazhigatelnaya (incendiary)
BetAB - Betonoboynaya (concrete piercing)
RRAB - rotativno-rasseivayushaya (cluster). There were 3 types of these bombs RRAB-3 - 250 kg, RRAB-2 -500 kg, RRAB-1- 1000 kg.
PTAB - Protivotankovaya (antitank)
OFAB - Oskolochno-fugasnaya (general -fragmentation)
AO - Aviacionno-oskolochnaya (aviation fragmentationary)
ODAB - Obyomno-detoniruyushaya (Volume detonation?)
SAB - Svetyashaya (light-providing)
FOTAB - special bomb for night photography.
KAB - Kislorodnaya (Oxygen) or Kontroliruemaya (Guided)

Index M means modyfication, but it is followed by 2 digit number.

So we will have for example:
FAB-500-450 M-43
General Purpose bomb 500 kg supposed, 450 real weight, modification of 1943.
BTW, bombs of the same type could look drastically differently.

Otlichna! Thanks for the info! I wouldn't have figured out "zazhigatelnaya" without help. I assume that a ZAB-100 would be more frequently issued to the long range night bombers than to frontal aviation planes.

Not necessarily. ZAB-100 was a lot more universal weapon then usually thought. It all depended on specific type of ZAB, and it was possible to use them as FAB with slightly lower effect. It was quite common to load even frontal aviation aircraft (especially on a anti-railway station or antishipping strikes).

Some more bombs i found:
MAB - Mostovaya (bridge)
BrAB - Broneboynaya (AP)
DAB - Dymovaya (Smoke)
AGB and AGITAB - Agitacyonnaya (Propaganda)
MPLAB and PLAB - Morskaya protivolodochnaya (ASW)
HAB - Himicheskaya (Chemical)

Thanks. I will buy a set and see what I can load them on. Probably an Il-2.

Has anyone heard of using 'Aerial Mines', perhaps from an Il-2? I read about it somewhere, but I have no idea how they worked or even if they existed. ???

Dave.

It was called
Aviacionnaya granata  "aviation grenade"
AG-2 or AG-10, digits corresponding to the quantity of grenades onboard. Yes, it was used mainly on Il-2 (2) and Pe-2 (10) and with good effect.
