Title: Yak-9D "22", "31"... 6 giap Black Sea Fleet
Post by: 66misos on September 11, 2014, 12:34:09 PM
Hi,
here are another nice photos of Yaks from 6 giap Black Sea Fleet by Evgeny Khaldey from http://www.fotosoyuz.ru (http://www.fotosoyuz.ru):

Note no. "31" bellow, view from the top - original 1943 NKAP painting scheme seems to be repainted to something not very compliant with that scheme, at least on the right wing and probably also front fuselage.

These pictures are from http://scalemodels.ru/modules/forum/viewtopic_t_9320_start_20.html (http://scalemodels.ru/modules/forum/viewtopic_t_9320_start_20.html):

1.) original Khaldey's photo:

2.) retouched photo from Avdeev's memoirs:

Colorized "22" and partially "31" is at http://sovietwarplanes.com/board/index.php?topic=1864.msg15323#msg15323 (http://sovietwarplanes.com/board/index.php?topic=1864.msg15323#msg15323)

Hi Misos,
I am a bit in doubt if the 'original' photo is really original. Those planes 22 and 31 seem an addiction, they would look more blurried if photographed from a plane that is not flying parallel to them.
The camo of 31 is particularly amazing.
Regards
Massimo

the last one is clearly a photo montage (or double exposure) - No "31" appears twice!

Hi KL,
A lot of thanks for those wonderful pictures. That 31 looks really interesting, mainly front fuselage and left wing. Note open half of rear undercarriage cover on 22.

Hi KL,
that last one is really nice and big photo. I know it, but not in such dimensions. Is there any (red) stencil to the left from Guard emblem on "31"? I think I saw something like that on some profiles and it is also part of this decal sheet:

And to add also geographical context here is picture of Sevastopol from Google Earth with the bay visible also on the GPW photos:

Hi,
another interesting photo, now from http://waralbum.ru/161756/ (http://waralbum.ru/161756/)

Original photo 4000x2406 (!!!) DPI,

Pilots from the 3rd Sq. 6 giap of Black See Fleet near by Yak-9D planes at the airport Saki, Crimea, April-May 1944, read the map of the combat actions area. There is a plane of Guard Leut. V.I.Boronov (board no. "31") in the background.

hi Misos,
interesting photo and information.  Now we know where the planes were based!

there is also a movie clip showing 6th giap VVS ChF Yaks flying over Sevastopol:

Hi KL,
thanks for link. I really like this kind of puzzle/mosaic. :)
I made screenshots from that Youtube shot:
Note regarding the closest plane:
- there is neither board number nor medal emblems,
- right upper wing painting scheme fits NKAP 1943 template only partially, especially at the wing root.

Hi Misos,
this is how Grib's Yak-9D camouflage is commented in SAFFC

Note "modified NKAP Template"!!!  If SAFFC author says that it was modified, it probably wasn't...

BTW, this is a photo not a movie still.  Check here http://visualrian.ru/ru/site/gallery/index/id/65773/context/%7B%22history%22%3A%7B%22period%22%3A%221940%22%7D%7D/

This is most likely the camera Haldey used to take this photo

from http://www.rps.org/news/2014/july/khaldei-leica

All that blurb about the K-16/39 film is fake...  :)

Hi,
that W on the wing looks a repainting made with the help of some masking tape. Although it is asthetically interesting, I think that its importance was exaggerated.

Hi Massimo,
after discussion with KL I agree with you. Now I prefer term that it is only variation during execution, similarly to two Yaks in my Reply #9 above.
