Title: Tu-2 47th GvRAP.
Post by: barneybolac on March 24, 2015, 12:10:25 AM
I was asked by a skinner who plays the same video game as I he wanted some information to do a skin for a TU-2.

I decided to go with white #4 From the 47th GvRAP. The question I have is how accurate a profile do you think this is based off of the photo's & the time frame for the colours chosen?

Any other information is appreciated.

Regards: Rodney.

my recommendation would be AMT-7 undersides and AMT-4 above.
a very common scheme for the Tu-2
...and black spinners.
maybe ?????? even white cowling rings

Hi,
this is a difficult question.
I've studied the camo of Tu-2 on this page http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/tu-2/tu-2camo/tu-2camo.htm (http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/tu-2/tu-2camo/tu-2camo.htm),
but the study was somewhat unconclusive: while a factory template is known, photo of planes respecting it are rare. The first desturbing thing is the  unexpected apparent extension of the light color, particularly on the wing uppersurfaces.
Green planes existed, but less common of what expected in VVS service. Many of the planes built after the war were camouflaged.
In the case of 04, I see a piece of wing where, interestingly, the number 4 is reported again. This piece looks camouflaged.
I see small irregularities on the fuselage that suggest that it could have been camouflaged too, but who knows...
I think to see trace of an overpainted red star under the canopy. This is strange too, because usually Tu-2s didn't have it.
I agree with white rings and black spinners. Could this be an old plane built before 1943?
Regards
Massimo

Thank you every one for your input. I am glad you posted the link of yours on the TU-2 Massimo.

I found some information that identifies blue #20's squadron.

Happened to stumble across a Chinese model company that has blue #20 as an option.
They list is as 113 BAD.

Also found other versions of the 47th pictures.

This version is more contrasted and seems to confirm a camouflage. I would draw it with the traditional 3 shades camouflage.

Turns out the link I had has a few photos of the same aircraft that I missed.

Since this photo above shows snow on the ground in an open area. Mechanics working on an aircraft that has two ladders near the aircraft & equipment under the aircraft & engine cowls open.
I think this photo proves it is white #4 with the help of this photo below.

(http://i1002.photobucket.com/albums/af142/barneybolac/Tu%202/9-2_zpszw2pl1fb.jpg) (http://s1002.photobucket.com/user/barneybolac/media/Tu%202/9-2_zpszw2pl1fb.jpg.html)

Snow on the ground/equipment under the aircraft/engine cowl open/clearly an open area/ladders near the plane??? Well ladder??? So what happened to the fold up ladder???

It is what the photographer stood on to take the photo. It explains the high angle the photo was taken from in such an open area where only the ladder would let the photographer get this shot of the plane.

if the above all the same plane/photo session, note that there is a wooden fence,( or possibly the wall of a blast pen) in the first shot, which is where the photographer took the high angle shot from.

Thanks for the photo of  'blue' 20, as I have the Xuntong kit.

I don't know if the photos are the same session they could be?  At least not taken in the exact same spot. The fence most likely is a blast pen as you pointed out Troy. The angle would be far steeper & higher if someone was taking photos from on top of that fence. Plus I think the fence would be visible off to the right of the #4 photo if the aircraft was still in its bunker.

What would the circle represent on the engine cowling?

Plus could this profile be correct after all and we may have a rare painted two tone upper finish per the n.6639 spec?

Hi,
I can't be sure, but I don't think. Grey-grey planes as Lavockins have a much different look.

A while ago (while I was still active in flight-sims), I made a set of default skins for the Tu-2 based on the factory template.
I have also tweaked the template (made by HAYATE) in Photoshop.

Feel free to use it as a base for your work
