Title: Modifications of Lend-Lease A-20G Bostons
Post by: Paco on January 22, 2016, 06:44:25 PM
The G & H versions of the Doglas A-20, thousands of which were sent to the Soviet Union under the Lend-Lease program, were manufactured with a solid nose containing either 4x20mm Hispano cannon or 4x.50 inch Browning MGs (An additional 2x .50 in. MGs were mounted in pods on the sides of the nose).  In this and other forums it has been amply documented that many of these A-20Gs were modified by removing the weaponry in the nose section and adding windows in order to re-create a working space for the navigator.  Most of the wartime photographs depicting these modified A-20G Bostons, however, are from naval Torpedo/Minelayer Squadrons. Similarly, all but one of the interviews I've read of veterans describing this modification, are of veterans from the naval T/M squadrons.

Does anyone have any information/data on the extent to which this modification was applied to A-20G/Hs in non-naval bomber squadrons?   In other words, was this modification (the removal of the nose guns and creation of a Navigator's compartment) applied across the board to all A-20G/Hs or was it generally only done for Bostons in naval squadrons?

Sincerely,

Paco
