Title: Greetings from the States!
Post by: Charlie45 on February 18, 2017, 11:04:15 PM
Hi my name is Charlie and l love Soviet aircraft.  Currently I am building the Micromir La-11 in North Korean colors and a Korean Mig-15bis. My interest is in WWII aircraft and Korean War in 1:48 scale. I also collect information on Soviet intervention in Korea and China. Many thanks to the owners of his site!

Here are my immediate concerns:

1.  Is there a true guide or references to Pe-2 colors postwar?

2.  Is there a photo of Mig-15 on camouflage colors in Korea/Manchuria?

Hi Charlie,
welcome here.

About planes of the 1945-50 period, there is not too much.
You can find something here:
http://massimotessitori.altervista.org/sovietwarplanes/pages/colors/1945-50-oldtypes/1945-50-oldtypes.html (http://massimotessitori.altervista.org/sovietwarplanes/pages/colors/1945-50-oldtypes/1945-50-oldtypes.html)
http://massimotessitori.altervista.org/sovietwarplanes/pages/colors/1945-1950-newtypes/1945-1950-newtypes.html (http://massimotessitori.altervista.org/sovietwarplanes/pages/colors/1945-1950-newtypes/1945-1950-newtypes.html)
and here on Pe-2
http://massimotessitori.altervista.org/sovietwarplanes/pages/pe2/pe2camo/pe2camo.htm (http://massimotessitori.altervista.org/sovietwarplanes/pages/pe2/pe2camo/pe2camo.htm)

Substantially, it was a period when convived:
- old 3-shades camouflage;
- perhaps grey/grey camouflage, that was codified in 1945 but not identified on photos;
- strange light repaintings, presumably grey;
- typical green/blue livery;
- overall grey livery;
- what else...

There was some  discussion on forums about three years ago, perhaps there is some on this forum too, about experimental liveries of Soviet MiG-15s in North Korean markings, but it was rather unconclusive.
Regards
Massimo

Howdy Charlie,

So far as the MiG-15 camo in Korea is concerned, let me start with a caveat.

From a Britmodeller post by Yury Tepsurkaev, one of the authors of Soviet MiG-15 Aces of the Korean War (Osprey) (begin of quote) Honestly, you can use paints which you like more, as no one can say what the colours were in real life. (end of quote).

No matter what you'll read on the subject, the actual shades of the colors used are not known!
Fact is, the camo was an experiment to determine which colors were best suited for the air to air combat in Korea, and the colors were mixed starting from basic colors of which there is a complete consumption record, i.e. During 1952 the 64th IAK spent 860 kgs of yellow enamel, 1291 kgs of green, 1008 kgs of black and... only 100 (one hundred) kgs of gray.

I recommend you take a look at the Britmodeller thread at http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234949599-mig-15-korean-war-camo-colours/ (http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234949599-mig-15-korean-war-camo-colours/).

The only pic of a camo, Soviet MiG-15in Korea I've so far been able to find is at http://russian7.ru/post/kak-russkie-letchiki-v-koree-voevali/ (http://russian7.ru/post/kak-russkie-letchiki-v-koree-voevali/) (4th from top)

So, if your main concern is historical accuracy, then I recommend you choose a 'silver' MiG-15.
If on the other hand, you want to build an 'exotic' aircraft and you're ready to compromise on the historical accuracy, then go ahead and choose one of the many schemes you'll find on the net and/or the the decal producers, after all no one will ever be able to question your choice of pattern and colors! ;)

Best regards.
