Title: Polikarpov donkeys family part 7: Type 5, Pak-1 gunsight. Khalkin-gol 1939
Post by: BLG on December 05, 2018, 06:24:02 PM
Hello everyone,

I continue the series of type-5 with a version that saw the replacement of the tubular viewfinder OP-1 by a collimator PAK-1. He is contemporary of type-10.

In 1938 were produced together  type-5, 10 17 and in 1939 these productions continued despite the appearance of types 18 to 28.
We can therefore assume that the pilots of these type-5 have benefited from the armored seat appeared with the type-10.
To continue exploring the conflicts that preceded the beginning of the 2nd GM, after Spain and China, I take you to Mongolia. As I was looking for a 2-tone camo to change from plain green and  black cowling, I found on Sovietwarplanes a picture from a Russian review of the Khalkin-gol battle showing two late-type-5s in the company of a type- 5 early, all 3 in 2 tones  camo.

I looked for this journal

And found the original photo, unfortunately only a little better than on SWP
However we can see that they are I-16 type-5, early and late with PAK-1 collimator and they are camouflaged 2 tones.

The "incident" (17000 deaths) of the Nomonhan (name of the border village for the Japanese) or Battle of Khalkin-gol (name of the border river for the Soviets) is a war that lasted from May to September 1939. This test of Japanese to judge the strength of the Soviet with long-term goal, the annexation of Mongolia and the extension to Siberia ended in a Japanese defeat.
According to many contemporary writers, this reoriented Japanese expansionism towards Southeast Asia and would be the cause of the profile of the IIWW in this part of the world. For those interested in the role of aviation, the first 2 books (Photos, profiles), for those who want a more global approach, the 3rd (Only text)

To make this I-16, I used the ICM Kit, the same kit under 3 different names, type-18, 24 or 28. Only the decals change.

Starting from an Amodel would have been easier, but I wanted to see if a bit of scratch  allowed to make a correct  type-5, as  the ICM kithas very thin details.. Realistic armored seat and perfect landing gear.

To start I removed the wing bumps corresponding to the  reinforcements for additional tank

The central part of the intrados is also to be reviewed. It is necessary to remove by sanding the flaps  appeared on the type-10. Wheel wells ahave to be improved like those of Amodel., Window, reinforcement.

I equiped  the interior  The PE is too flat to make the appearance of the ribs of the Ishak. I glued some strips of PC.

ICM provides a good armored seat

On the fuselage, you must remove the radio hatch  and the right door, A little cyano does it
And suppress the fairings of the fuselage guns which appeared on type 10

Types 18 have the lower exhaust grouped by 2 in 2 ports  to allow the housing of skis spatulas. It is therefore necessary to reconstitute a lower panel with 4 separate exhausts.

I got 3 Amodel lower panels in kits that I converted to type-4 and UTI-2
So I was able to do this type-5 by grafting this part.
There is plenty of space between the bottom cover and the front cover because the Amodel front cover is thicker than the ICM cover.

The installation of flaps has resulted in a reduction in the size of the fins from type-10. It is therefore necessary to reconstruct the correct size.

Finally, I replaced the large cone adapted to the variable pitch propeller appeared on the type-18, by a small resin cone that I obtained by molding an Amodel cone. I also modified  the ICM AV-1 propeller blades to make it a typ-5 Vish-6.
I used the Part photoetched to represent the faceplate and shutters.

Here it is before painting

The decoration I selected is an interpretation that I made by consulting with Massimo
It is therefore questionable, but based on factual arguments.

1-Many planes that participated in the Khalkin-gol conflict were camouflaged, probably on the ground. There are thus examples of DC-3, SB-2 and I-15 bis whose gray tint was covered with probably green coils.
2-The types-5 were there before the conflict. These are types-10 and 17 that have been sent as reinforcement. The photos of these types 5 show them dark extrados, probably AIIz and clear intrados. In 38-39 the directive was light gray metal parts AE-9 and aluminum for fabric  parts AII Al.

So I assumed that these planes were AIIz / AE-9 / AII Al and that the camouflage was obtained with a lighter shade than green, I opted for the gray that I used to do the AE- 9 of the intrados.

In Kotelnikov's book, there are these profiles proposed for types10.

And here is my colorized interpretation of the photo.

The collimator comes from the ACE photoetch and the windshield is vacuformed from a master made from a Hasegawa windshield.
To try to make this aspect of spots more or less transparent and irregular, I first painted the plane with an airbrush. I took Humbrol 159 for AII-z, Aluminium +white for AII-Al and Humbrol 64 for AE-9. Then the spots on the upper surface were brushed with successive layers of very dilute H64.(https://i.servimg.com/u/f88/19/84/12/04/17kg12.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/19841204/654)
