Title: Hampden camouflage
Post by: expositor on February 05, 2019, 10:38:44 PM
Is there a final word on the colors of those Hampden torpedo bombers handed over to the Northern Fleet?  Were they 'sand and spinach' or 'slime and sewage?'.      Thanks!

Hmm, it would be better if use you the correct colours.

Original Hampden camouflage was standard RAF bomber colours, Dark Green/ Dark Earth uppers, Night undersides.

The Torpedo bomber scheme was Coastal Command colours, which was the Temperate Sea Scheme,  uppers in Extra Dark Sea Grey/Dark Slate Grey (despite name is basically green) over Sky.

The Hampden recovered from Russia was originally bomber colours, and was repainted in Coastal Command colours, but the top coat mostly weathered off in the recovered wreck photos

They were converted to the TB role at Brush Coachworks in Loughborough and finished in TSS with Sky under surfaces. Since they were intended for night action the sky was over painted with black before deployment. The Russians simply painted over the British markings with their own green. The bomb bay doors were not changed, the ventral gun position was changed to a shallower profile to accommodate the airtail of the torpedo. The rearmost frame of the bomb bay has it's lower section in a concave shape. The doors closed normally after the torpedo had been dropped.

There apparently is a hint or two of TSS remaining, or so it is said in another thread, but what you see is the underlying old Bomber Command colours. However, it seems to have been decided to paint it DG/DE during the restoration.

Thread is worth reading as it is about Hampden with Soviet UTK-1 turret

Hmmm, I thought most enthusiasts would remember the nicknames given to those colors in the TL/Bomber and TS schemes back then....Thanks for those links and your explanation!  I thought I read something like that some time ago but couldn't remember for sure, hence my query.  This tablet of mine doesn't let me search for some reason; as soon as I try to punch one in, the bloody keypad disappears.  Thanks again for taking the time to share!

Hi,
have you noted the alignment of the star under the wings?

Yes, that's one you can't miss; but what do you think about the other wing?
