Title: Polikarpov monoplanes with radial engine. From TsKB-12 to I-185
Post by: BLG on March 07, 2019, 11:01:30 PM
Hello every body.

I had begun to post the building of several I-16 in the "Pre WW-II aviation" topic, monoplanes fighter of the 20s and 30s.
Very few answers and visits.
As  the Polikarpovs I build belongs to "pre  GPW" and GPW eras and nobody seems interested in the building , I post here the gallery of the kits of the TsKB 12 family.
For each picture, you have a link to see more photos.
If someone is interested in building tricks, the link is:Building (http://fighters.forumactif.com/t88113-polikarpov-i-16-du-proto-au-i-185-pj-amodel-icm-artmodel-eastern-express-msd-1-72?highlight=polikarpov+i+-16)

Hi Bernard,
the thematic collection is absolutely impressive, particularly in consideration that some of the models had to be strongly elaborated to represent their subjects.  I am particularly impressed for the 'fat' versions of I-185s that are not reproduced in kits, for what I know, I would know more about them.

Massimo

Hi Massimo,

Thank you for your interest.
The "fat" I-185 appear like that because their fuselage was shorter than the next versions.
A very nice  M-71 version has been produced by "Airkits". Unfortunately, V Kozyrev died recently. The kits are still available on the web, but I dont know if production will continue.
http://hobbymodels.lv/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=172 (http://hobbymodels.lv/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=172)
Despite this availability, I prefered to build my own  because my main pleasure in modeling is to create new versions from the  kits I have .

3 prototypes with this fuselage were built.
One tested in wind tunnel and equiped with a M90 , never flighted.
 The second received a M81 then a M71.  It'my second.
The third received a M-71. It can be recognised on picture with a longer oil radiator.
The two next, with M82 and M71 "étalon" had a 30cm part added between canopy and rudder.

You can see how I built them here: http://www.master194.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=106130&p=1354675&hilit=polikarpov+i+185#p1354675 (http://www.master194.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=106130&p=1354675&hilit=polikarpov+i+185#p1354675)

Hi Bernard,
very interesting work.
Is the shop Hobbymodels reliable, in your knowledge? I've seen a lot of tempting things.
I think to have seen a photo of the first prototype with a short wing (I suppose provisional)  while tested in the wind tunnel.

Hi Massimo,
The M90 version was tested with partial and complete wings in wind tunnel.
I dont know Hobby models, but it is in Riga , Latvia, Europe. You can pay  in euro with Paypal , which is a garantee. Their is a lot of small and medium producers of nice  kits in Russia and Ukrain  (Pro&jet, Airkits, ABM, Katran , Modelsvit, Mikromir etc...) , and I think they use  such shop in country which are close and have kept link with Russia to sell their products in western Europe.
But 50€ for a small I-185, it's a lot. With a little work, you can make  like me one with the Model russia Maquette/MSD  kit which costs 8€ and have the pleasure to create .
The Art model kit is a far more accurate  representation of the M-71 etalon, but less easy to transform in a short fuselage version.

Best regards
Bernard

Excellent work, and a very useful reference for anyone wanting to build any of the I-16 variants! I think the way you have organized things is very helpful, especially the "Building" link (which I bookmarked immediately!).

I was sorry to hear of the death of V. Kozyrev. I bought some of his very nice products, both resin and vacuform, during the past 10 years. Among them, I have his resin kit of the early I-16 type 5 partially completed.

For whatever interest it may be, Prop&Jet made a resin upgrade set for the Art Model I-185 kit, although it might be difficult to obtain now:

I think the way you have organized things is very helpful, especially the "Building" link (which I bookmarked immediately!). Thank you John. I have used  a lot of data found  on SWP and talking tro Massimo. I try to thank in my way  with this contribution. Happy to be helpful.

I was sorry to hear of the death of V. Kozyrev. I bought some of his very nice products, both resin and vacuform, during the past 10 years. Among them, I have his resin kit of the early I-16 type 5 partially completed.  Small monoplanes may be made from scratch or adaptation of existing kits if we accept a quality lower than that of Airkits/Kajuk/Kozyrev (RIP), but  I have bought a kit of V Kozyrev  that I would have be unable to built, his Tupolev KR6. Astonishing corrugated surface.

For whatever interest it may be, Prop&Jet made a resin upgrade set for the Art Model I-185 kit, although it might be difficult to obtain now  Musa produced only 50sets. Nearly impossible to find. It is not really useful. Compared to the plans I have, I have not seen obvious differences for the tail surfaces. The cockpit may be easily enhanced by scratch of with the Eduard PE. The only part to change is the propeller which turn in the wrong direction. I have made copies of La 5 propeller.

Bernard

Hi Bernard,
excellent description of the work, as usual.
Maybe you could consider I-17s and ITP to complete your collection of Polikarpov monoplanes.

Hi Massimo,
You guessed right. The next project is  "Polikarpov monoplane fighters with online engine" from Il-400 to Mig-3 and ITP

The I/17 are done "from the box" and I'm scratching the ITP M1. Here is the building of a master

Hi Bernard,
interesting scratchbuilding, is the fuselage made of wood? What about the wings?
About the TsKB-19, have you done some research on it?

Hi Massimo.
Foe the TsKB 15, I have used your informations to correct all the defects of the kit.
For the TsKB 19, I have found 2 posts on scalemodels.ru

http://scalemodels.ru/modules/forum/viewtopic.php?t=30309&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 (http://scalemodels.ru/modules/forum/viewtopic.php?t=30309&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0)
http://scalemodels.ru/articles/4188-obzor-Amodel-1-72-i-17-ckb-19bis.html (http://scalemodels.ru/articles/4188-obzor-Amodel-1-72-i-17-ckb-19bis.html)

But I have found the kit good enough to be buit "from the box". I have choosen the initial version without oil cooler and with wheel plates, easier to make than the last one without wheel cover. In this case, fixing the wheels would be difficult
For the ITP  I'm making a master in medium density fiberboard (MDF) easy to carve and sand, but non suitabel to make a kit. I will make a resin copy . The wings and stabilizer will be made from parts of a Cap croix du sud Mig 3. Not too difficult.
Best regards
Bernard

Hi Bernard,
so you could use the resin copy as a base to build the other prototype of ITP, changing its nose.

Hi Massimo,
The M2 is more elegant than the M1, so I ordered one to Omega models to be sure to have a good model. And I will be able to compare commercial production to mine.

Hi Bernard,
this looks a good idea. Omega Models has a lot of interesting models in its catalogue. I bought an I-30 of Yakovlev, it looks nice but the canopy is not so well moulded.

Hi everybody,
Here is a complement to this serie of radial engine Polikarpov fighters.
With the work that Massimo is doing to prepare the new pages about I-16, I have realized that my Type-29 had to be corrected, and I wanted to built the late version of this  plane,

So, here are both

The correction of the ealy type: Making slots, and moving the outlet of the oil cooler and the exhaust of cylinder 6.

Hi Bernard,
thank you for posting the photos of your work on the Type 29. I am glad that my drawings have found a so good use.
Some courage is needed to start such a modification on an already completed model.
The page on Type 29 is more or less completed, I wonder if to upload it or to wait for the other pages. A reorganization of the I-16 page is needed too to keep the parts on completed models into a subpage to make space for the new contents.

Massimo

Hi Massimo,
Thank you for your comment and your help to built these kits.
May be it will be easier to add one page after the other than to overhaul the I-16 pages all together. Broken links and other problems would be easier to fix.
And it would be  a way to attract more readers, waiting for the next page to come ;).
On the french forums were I post, I have already announced  future I-16 pages on SWP.

Bernard

Hi Bernard,
this could be a possibility.
What worries me is that I see some difficulty to see the updated images when I upload a new version, probably is a problem of cache of the pc that preserves the already downloaded images to save time. In recent time, I was obliged to modify the name of the file to be sure that it was uploaded again after a modification. So I'm trying to upload drawings in definitive version, for what is possible.

Hi everybody,
the researchs done by Massimo for his new pages on I-16 make me realized that I had make a mistake on my UTI-4 with M-25v engine. Even if this type did not have ski recesses, the M25v engine needed ventilation and the UTI-4 had small vents in the undercowling. I could have seen  this before, as I photographed a DB 605 in Vantaa museum some years ago, and behind the engine,  the UTI-4  with its the vents is clearly vivisble.

To complete my UTI collection , I have built the UT-2, scratch from a ICM type 24.

Excellent work on those Ishaks! I think I may have seen the tip 12 before, but I don't recall seeing the I-163 before - I'll need to read up on those variants if I ever write my book on Polikarpov fighters.

Nice builds, all of them! The paint work looks great, too. A couple of questions:
(1) The propeller spinners - where did you get these, or did you make them yourself? The Amodel Type 5 spinner is too shallow; the ones in your photos look more like the one from the Amodel UTI-4.
(2) Same thing for the canopies on the type 12 and the I-163 - did you form these yourself, or are they from Bring It!/Modellers' Little Helper?

Thanks in advance for any answers!

John

Hi Bernard,
I am very impressed for the growing up of your collection. I wonder if anything is still missing in this monumental work.
I owe to Righidan the most part of recently collected documents about the I-16, I see that you have made an excellent use of it.
I've resumed to work on the I-16 page, starting with some updates to the drawings, and seeing your works is a good inspiration for this.

Massimo

Thank you for your comments
(1) The propeller spinners -  For the Type 12,  it's PU home made. I  prepared  a mold using a  Amodel spinner as master  as I have built several type 5 and 10 from the ICM Type 24. For the I-163, I have corrected the ICM spinner as the photos show a more pointed spinner
(2)  the canopies on the type 12 and the I-163 . Home made with vivak and thermoforming. Plaster master . Frames made with adhesive aluminium tape.
John
I wonder if anything is still missing in this monumental work. I think they were my last I-16, except if you make me discover new datas like theses Type 12 and I-163 or correction to improve my already built kits  . However, I have a lot of other Polikarpov projects. From IL400 to ITP-M2 including the Mig for the monoplanes and several U2 for the biplanes.

Bernard

Hi Bernard,
a Type 17 with long ailerons could be interesting enough? I still wonder if it has come out of the factory in this way, or was rebuilt as an hybrid.

Hi Massimo,
Before hybrids,  I would have to built prototypes like the UT-3, I-16 TK or type 20 to complete the family. May be later.

Hi everybody,
As stated in my last answer to Massimo, I have build the UTI-3 and I-16 V (or TK) type 5 .
I have  used the ICM  type 18-24-28 . This kit is a better base than the UTI-4 or Type 5 Amodel, even if there is more work to obtain an early version.

UTI-3

Massimo suggests a yellow color for this plane. I remained more classical with aluminium dope.

Nice! I especially like the I-16V - is that the cowling face from the ICM I-15bis? You really did a lot of work on these impressive models!

Thank you John,
Yes, I used the spared cowling face of an I-15 bis that I used to built this Zhong 28 B.  For the UTI 3, I did not used the cowling parts   of the ICM I-16 and scrachbuilt the face  and the cowling.

Hi Bernard,
you have made models of high interest.
Is the emblem on the tail of the UTI-3 made by a printed decal? What is written on it?
About the plane TK, is the cowling longer than usual I-16 Type 5?

Massimo

Title: Re: Polikarpov monoplanes with radial engine. From TsKB-12 to I-185

Hi Massimo,
This acronym stands for UTI-3, Ути - 3 in printed cyrillic , and   (https://i.servimg.com/u/f88/19/84/12/04/uti3-815.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/19841204/2819) in italic cursive   . The T turns into M. I was able to reproduce it on hand made decal. I was unable to understand the 3 signs on the star, so I reproduced them as I saw.
The cowlings of both planes are NACA and this changes the aspect of the planes . For the I-16 V, I  used  the drawing of Maslov and the cowling has the same length than the ICM, 15 mm  For  the UTI-3, I used  the side picture  and the cowling is longer, 17mm.

Bernard

Hi Bernard,
thank you for the answer.  It's difficult to imagine what is written inside the star.
About the hinge line between fin and rudder of the UTI-3, I think that it should be covered by a two-piece strip of thin sheet as on TsKB-12 and Type 4. You could add it with a stripe of paper.
