Title: MiG-3 page wide updating is on work
Post by: Massimo Tessitori on March 21, 2022, 10:17:36 AM
Hi all,
I'm working on a wide update of the MiG-3 page that is showing its age. I'll remove a lot of obsolete pages and I'm making new profiles. I've not updated the online page for now.
I am considering to remove the wide galleries of profiles and make new pages where the profiles are collected by themes; for now, I've made a page on 12 GvIAP in March 1942 and 148 IAP in May 1942.

Massimo

Hi all,
does anyone know any interesting link to pages, movies and photos of 401 IAP? I already know the page on ava.org.ru, I would add something the the new page on MiG-3 on which I am working on.

Dear Massimo & friends,
I have in mind a very good article about the 401 IAP, made by Mr. Timin, available at the address https://warspot.ru/10007-tyazhyoloe-ispytanie-dlya-ispytateley with the title "A tough test for testers".
Using https://warspot-ru.translate.goog/10007-tyazhyoloe-ispytanie-dlya-ispytateley?_x_tr_sl=ru&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=it&_x_tr_pto=wapp you can go directly to the translated article, or you can use Yandex translate to understand it.
I can add a small bit of information to the account of Suprun's death, the German pilot Heinz Gerken was downed on 26 July 1941 in the Bf 109F-2 Werk Nr. 12874 "White 5" of the 10th Staffel of JG-51, according to the Kracker archive.
Regards
Daniele

Hi all,
I am working to collect some photos of typical MiG-3s of the mid 1941 as examples of prewar planes.
Now I am a bit confused about the planes found of the airport of Siaulai, Lithuania, in late June 1941 and captured by Germans. Barbarossa victims, of T.J. Kopansky, attributes them to 31 IAP and states that 15 IAP was on the Alytus airfield and equipped with I-153s; Mr. Timin states that they were of 15 IAP,     http://ava.org.ru/iap/15.htm  (http://ava.org.ru/iap/15.htm) and his work is recent and seems reliable; Ava.org.ru states that 31 IAP had nothing to do with Kaunas. http://ava.org.ru/iap/31.htm (http://ava.org.ru/iap/31.htm)
So, should the information of 'Barbarossa victims' simply be ignored, or there is some other thing that I am missing on this?
Regards
Massimo

Hi,
excellent photo, I received it some days ago from Tora, I have 3 further ones from before but this is the best one.
Are you sure that it is of 124 IAP? I think that it is from 7 IAP because it is nearly identical to plane 04, with the same disposition of stars and points in common with the camo pattern, and resemble to plane 67 of the same unit.
Pity that the number on the fuselage isn't fully readable, it could have been 40 or 46 or 48.

sorry my late answer. I'm not 100% sure, but a member of the forum said Кикерино (Kikerino) the home airdrome of the 124 iap.

Hi all,
I've updated the work made till now to update the MiG-3 page, that was waiting for maintenance and updates since long ago. The work isn't finished yet, but I've changed many profiles and informations that were not up to the informations emerged in the latest 10 or 15 years.  If you find defects that I can correct, please let me know.
I've utilized a new template both for MiG-1 and 3, and changed the rendering of the color shades. I've added new profiles, corrected other ones and removed some of which I wasn't sure enough.

Some examples:

Much work has to be done in the next year.

New content looks amazing.
Mig-3 research is what brought me to this website in the first place years ago, so it will be a pleasure to re-read everything!

Thank you. In the first years, the MiG-3 had given the name to the whole site.

Regarding the Vnukovo 'red 02' wing color (s).
Something seems weird to me with just one wing being a green replacement usually both would be replaced to avoid different wing stress due to different component age)

If the rear-three-quarter photo does indeed show 'red 02', this might be before the wing-swap (i.e. not necessarily taken at the same time as the more fmous group photo), so both outer wings could very well be white at that particular moment.

Aleksandar

Hi,
I agree that any theory is equally acceptable. The plane could have had both wings coloured for some time, or one only. The color could have been green or red; if it was red, it lasted for one or two days only, just for the ceremony. If it was green, it could have been a visual distinctive for a commander plane. The highly reflective surface suggests more red than green, but glossy green is always possible.
I am not sure that the wings were from another plane, because wings without flaps were installed on production planes with the new nose for some time around July or August 1941, associated with early type tail wheel doors that, on this plane, were removed. By sure, if one wing was without slats, the other one had to be the same.
Regards
Massimo

New data. Sorry, №12 wasn't from 7 iap. Correct is 39 iap - http://ava.org.ru/iap/39m.htm
Also №№15 and 20 are visable.

Thank you, the page has many interesting images. Those of downed MiG-3 n.1 are particularly interesting and of difficult interpretation. Seems that some form of winter camouflage was there, made with tiny lines on the rear of the fuselage, tail and wings.

I've moved plane 12 and relative photos to the Siberian page. I'm still thinking what to do about the amazing photos of the belly landed plane.

Do u think both photos of the belly landed are the same plane?

I think so. It looks strangely asymmetrical as painting. Lighter lines are vaguely visible on the left side too on the tail , although much less contrasted, perhaps because of dirt.
