Title: New 1/72 La-5 Resin Kits?
Post by: John Thompson on September 11, 2010, 07:11:30 PM
From the following thread on Scalemodels.ru, it seems that Musa Zekoreev (I think I have his last name correct) of Prop and Jet fame is planning to do a series of La-5 kits in resin, in 1/72 scale. What's also interesting is that he is apparently enlisting the assistance of his fellow Scalemodels.ru enthusiasts to make sure the final product is as accurate as possible, if I understood the online translation correctly:

http://scalemodels.ru/modules/forum/viewtopic_t_25121.html#

I hope he makes enough of them that some are available in shops outside Russia! (And from there, to ME... ;) )

I actually had some correspondence with Musa, many years ago, and I was very grateful that he gave me some samples of his excellent vacuform kits, but I certainly wouldn't expect to be so lucky this time! He's a very nice person, by the way, as you can probably guess from his generosity (and of course, his enthusiasm for the La-5!). ;)

As of September 14, Musa is really making fast progress with the masters for this kit - he has already finished the cowling (no "onion shape", apparently!) and has done quite a lot on the fuselage!

Good news indeed, John.  Thank you for the heads up!  I look forward to seeing these Lavochkins.  Hopefully he'll do the whole series of La-5's.

Jason

Another update - it appears Musa is using the wings from the Dakoplast LaGG-3 as masters:

http://radikal.ru/F/s56.radikal.ru/i151/1009/d2/eda6de05cde1.jpg.html

He credits someone named Alexander Nikolayevich Kozyrev as the originator of the wing parts - was he one of the people who created Dakoplast? I have heard of Pavel Bistrov as a key person behind Dakoplast, but not Kozyrev. The name "Kozyrev" could have been the source of the "ko" in Dako, but the same thing goes for Toko as well!

I suspect I will never get the chance to buy any of these P&J resin La-5 kits, but it's certainly educational watching the project take shape! (We need one of those "eating popcorn" emoticons/smileys here...) ;)

Hi John,
I supposed that the La-5 of Cooperativa would have been a good starting point. The fuselage of Dako LaGG3 looks a bit fat, at a first glance.

Hi Massimo!  :) It appears that he's making the fuselage master from scratch, using solid plastic. So far, only the wings are based on those from another kit.

Hi John,
perhaps I'm wrong, but I don't understand what is of so terribly wrong in all the existing models that can't be taken as a base. To improve existing things means that it will come out better in any way; but, starting from scratch could mean to risk new errors, different from those of the predecessors.

Hi Massimo! He seems to be trying to create a perfect La-5, judging from what I see in the most recent posts in that thread. Numerous images from different sources showing the shape of the LaGG-3/La-5 wing have been posted, and now it seems that some of the people replying are sort of cautioning him not to go crazy over a few fractions of a millimetre in the wing tip shape, particularly in 1/72 scale. As I said before, I'm doubtful that I'll ever own one of these kits, but I think his thorough research will be helpful in the future when building the La-5 kits that are already available. I know I was surprised that he chose to use the Dakoplast wings instead of the Toko wings; in the past, when trying to make my own "perfect" La-5, I adapted the Toko LaGG-3 series 66 wings to the Cooperativa fuselage (after correcting the cowling shape), but this was mainly because the wing root width on the Cooperativa fuselage fits the Toko wings almost exactly, so it was relatively easy to do. I think the thread is very educational, and I hope he doesn't get discouraged and give up before he finishes!

PS - One very subtle difference between the Dako and Toko wings is that the Voronin drawings show a very slight increase in dihedral on the underside of the wing tips, while the top is relatively flat. This is not shown in the MBI drawings. The Toko wings have this detail; the Dako wings do not. It would obviously be very easy to correct if anyone felt it was necessary; maybe that's one of the reasons I used the Toko wings myself. And it's something that would be almost impossible to verify in a GPW-era photo, unless the same feature was carried over to the La-7 and could be confirmed on a preserved example of this aircraft.

Hi Massimo,
I have to agree with you. I read the whole thread last night and think he (Musa) is going to extremes. He's heavily relying on drawings and praises Michal Bradac ones (MBI publication) quite highly. AML kits were created based on these drawings but they are being "trashed" by Russian modeling community! What gives? The only "major" discrepancy he found is "incorrect" wing tip shape (narrower) which in 1/72 scale will be hardly noticeable by the naked eye as well as minute discrepancies in fuselage cross-sections or wing profiles.
Cheers,
Mario

Hi Mario! Well, okay, but read this:
http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A//scalemodels.ru/modules/myarticles/article_storyid_1036.html&sl=ru&tl=en&hl=en&ie=UTF8

Here's the original if you can read the Russian version - if you can, it might be more informative than the translation:
http://scalemodels.ru/modules/myarticles/article_storyid_1036.html

My understanding is that, while AML may have used the MBI La-5 drawings, they made some errors regarding wing location, etc., that still leave the opportunity for someone else to do a better La-5 series. And, if you've never tried building one of the AML La-5 series kits, let me tell you from bitter experience, accurate or not, they are brutes to assemble. For myself, I've pretty much given up hope of a good, cheap, accurate, injection-molded La-5 during my lifetime, and I'm now begging for a 1/72 Yak-1b! ;)

(In fact, I still think the KP La-5FN and the VES/Cooperativa La-5 kits are as good as we can expect, and really, they're not that bad, so I actually agree with what you and Massimo are saying about existing kits)

Hi everyone! Hi, John!
I apologize for my English. Unfortunately my knowledge does not allow you to communicate in a proper degree. I will use an interpreter. I beg my pardon.
Indeed, I began work on a master series of La-5. I will explain why he went this way. Wing DAKO slightly incorrectly, smaller in size and in my opinion is a bit wrong ending, as well as a lack of depth of wells wheels. All of this has been fixed. But I'm very sorry that did not make a wing from scratch. Since the work to rectify it was no less than if made from scratch. TOKO wing has more errors. However as the fuselage. The fuselage of the Cooperative, I did not use because it is difficult to correctable mistakes. In particular section in it is almost impossible to fix. To develop a model using the dimensions and illustrations from the technical description of the aircraft. Now work is suspended, as there are several issues require clarification. Soon I hope to resume the process. Dear John, unless the model is finished, your fears about its acquisition are without any basis. Consider that the model you already have. ))
Regards to all.
Musa Zekoreev.

Nice. It looks very well detailed, and the choice of versions is impressive. At a first look, it doesn't look easy to be built. Who knows where it can be found, and its price?

Oh, don't worry - those questions have been asked numerous times on the Scalemodels.ru thread where I lifted the links from; too soon for an answer, though. Go here:

Thank you, John, I was able to get some information from scalemodels.  Musa said it will cost 800 roubles, which comes out to $28.26USD.  Sounds reasonable for a good quality resin model.  I think I'm up for one.

Regards,

Jason

Hello!
I am pleased to report that work on the model is finished and soon will begin serial castings. about 60 parts, more than 30 different colors, 2 types of canopy.
More detailed pictures are here: http://vif2ne.ru/smf/forum/2/co/306810.htm
This photo is a test assembly of the first casting. Time spent about 40 minutes. Nothing customized or rasp. Collected as it is. Considering that I and the temperature was 38 Celsius. Damn flu  :) it can be said with the assembly is no problem. All joints on the 4 +.
About the price, all right, if ordered directly from me. ~28 USD + shipping.
John please let me know your postal address in the personal message. I lost it.  :(

I know as carefully the author studied drawings before this work. And I declare that it is the most exact model La-5 in 1/72 for today.

To get this set it is possible directly at the author - it is at this forum as Walker (http://sovietwarplanes.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=15879).

Hi Anatoliy! No, I think "Super!", "it is fine", and "delightful!" are perhaps not strong enough words to describe this beauty! ;) The detail is quite amazing. I've seen the comments on Scalemodels.ru from some of the people who have already received this kit, and they are very enthusiastic about it. Thank you for posting such good images!
