 Good morning!

Decided to post here as opposed to just opening a whole new topic for a simple question.

Was looking around model shops and e-bay, only found a few offerings of this kit (understandable as there were apparently only a bit over a thousand made).

What i would like to know is, the kit depicts an "early" type of this aircraft. Was it used in the GPW? If not, what external/ visible changes were done on the (i assume there was one) "late" type? More specificaly, was there in reality an early-late type distinction?

If the kit can be made to represent a GPW aircraft, early or modified to a late, please let me know so i can try to get one! Thank you very much!

Btw, i heard that ICM was going to release one in 1/48, but have yet to see a rivet or spar of it.... Is it coming out? Is another company going to tackle the subject? Or should i go ahead and get the AMG kit?

 Regards,

 Panayotis

Hi Panayotis! I can't say I've studied the I-153 in that kind of detail, but I've never seen any reference to a distinction between early and late I-153's. I believe there were some differences between those with M-62 and M-63 engines, but as far as external appearance goes, these were minor, and were limited to the configuration of the slots/openings in the cowling faceplate, and maybe the propeller. Trouble is, I've never seen drawings or photos that show this in specific detail. You might check the pinned I-153 thread at Scalemodels.ru:
http://scalemodels.ru/modules/forum/viewtopic_t_14166_start_0.html

These drawings may help:
http://www.airwar.ru/other/draw/i153.html
http://www.airwar.ru/other/draw/i153eksprint.html

I think you might have trouble finding photos that show the cowling face for any particular decal option that you choose, though, so it might not be possible to decide which engine type was used on any specific aircraft. If I find anything more helpful, I'll certainly post it.

Yes, the wait for those ICM I-153's (in both 1/48 and 1/72) seems to be taking forever! I've asked ICM several times by e-mail about the 1/72 version, but the answer continues to be "this year", the same as it was last year...  Huh

Hi John and Panayotis,
about the distinction between M-62 and 63, there is something here
http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/i15/i-153/i-153painting/i-153painting.htm
Apart for the late type front openings and the spinner, the M-63 engined planes were characterized by a different style of hot air outlet for the oil cooler.

Thanks, Massimo - an excellent page, with lots of great photos! Seeing it makes me even more desperate for ICM to release their 1/72 I-153!  Cheesy
