Hi, I heard about, but the first pics appears: The Mus?e de l'air's yak-3, the only original one, will is being renoved... first pics:   the 25 code is the same that other well know pics of the yak-3 when theu arrive to the Normandie-niemen (like the 24 and the 44) The 21 in cirylic could be a russian decoration too (perhaps of the 18 GIAP) the 18 could be painted for the arrive at Paris or later... I think that Pascal will be able to show you much more quite soon, cause a friend of him had acces to the plane.... He told me for exemple about pics of the wings roots, who show original AMT-11//AMT-12 !!! Xan |

Sadly, only a handful of Soviet WWII planes were preserved in museums. Musee De l'Air Yak-3 is one of them, but it's not the the only original Yak-3 - there are three of them:
1. Early production Yak-3 preserved at OKB Yakovlev museum, now in California, USA
2. Musee de l'Air Yak-3 made in late 1944
3. Yak-3 in the Belgrade museum, Serbia, made in early 1945
About the numbers found on Musee de l'Air Yak-3:
- number 25 is factory applied number, part of the serial number
- number 21 is tactical number applied before this plane arrived in N-N regiment
- number 18 is N-N tact number
Original colors discovered so far are quite dark! Something like dark gray and extra dark gray. Underside blue is grayish turquoise.

Hi Xan! This is good news; it would be interesting if someone could attempt to compare the original AMT-7/-11/-12 paints with FS595 colour samples. I know that an exact match is not likely, but this information would be helpful. John |

Hi ! As Xan said, a friend of mine has taken some pics of the MAE's Yak-3 last week. The restoration of this aircraft has began, and the "display" paint is gone. We now can see the old colours... For example, the AMT-7 on the undersurface :  And the different stars on the fuselage :  This plane seems to be the Lebras' one, n? 18. She crashed on august 1945 so she has not been registered in the official records after the war. Her serial number was the 2530... I'll post other pics later, if you agree. Pascal |

Hi Jason,
the original one is the darker blue.
Pascal and I we are very glad because it's just the tonality we imagined...
this restoration will be amazing for all of us! I can't stand waiting for the original AMT-11 and AMT-12...

Thank you for the answer, Xan! That darker colour definitely looks more like what I expect AMT-7 to look like than that very light blue colour that was painted over it. I, too, am anxious to see what the AMT-11 and AMT-12 look like.

As always, John, thank you for the links! Not that it has anything to do with the Yak-3, or any other VVS fighter, but FS36521 sure looks like AMT-1 to me.

Great photos, Xan. I'm interested to see further images and further informations, maybe the FS equivalences of the paints. However, there is a warning: the original red of the star looks altered. So, other colors could be altered too. Hi Jean, unfortunately the pictures can't be saved on the hd. Maybe with stamp and photoshop... Regards Massimo |
