This is the Academy MiG 21 MF Fishbed J kit, which, if my search was correct, more correctly depicts a "bis" version of the aircraft.

It is a special model to me, as it is the first i finished after more than a decade away from scale modeling, as well as it being a 'Red Star Airplane' of course!  Grin

Academy's kit captures the general outline of the aircraft well enough (there are errors), but sadly it is quite spartan and vague as far as interior details are concerned. All interior and exterior details were scratch built/ improved using common stuff like plastic card, lead/ aluminum foil etc.

Took about a year and a half to finish (was working on and off on it), and just as the finishing touches were applied, my local hobby store brought in the Eduard offerings, which are a vast improvement over the old Academy kit in every single way! Typical...

 Enjoy!  Cool

Hi Palanadine,
beautiful model indeed. The MiG-21 was one of my favourite planes many years ago.

 Thank you Massimo!

I have a special liking for this aircraft, and will be returning to this subject in the future, maybe with a developmental prototype, like the Ye-8, which i find the best looking of them.

Excellent model! I'm also a fan of the Ye-8, by the way. Have you seen Laurent Stern's MiG-21 pages? Wrong scale, though, but may be of interest, I hope:

Hi Palanadine,
the Ye-8 is a beautiful plane indeed.
Hi John,
the linked page is good, but they stopped to update it many years ago, before the releasing of the Zvezda kit. I have some half-built KP, I was building them with the gear up for a  exposition on a pedestal.

Interesting page indeed John, but since i prefer my "Red Force" fighters/ attackers on 1/48 scale not something that can help me personally - good though for those of us working on 1/72. What i think might be potentially quite useful, regardless of scale, is this: http://www.the-blueprints.com/blueprints/modernplanes/mikoyan-gurevich-mig/ (for example, MiGs).

Would be interesting to know just how well these drawings hold up to reality however, so it'd be great if you guys could take a look through them! If they are indeed good, i hope to print several of them on 1/48th scale and compare the model kit parts to them, this will (hopefully) help correct any inaccuracies.

As for the Ye-8, for the time being i have acquired the -PF version from Academy, and maybe get an Eduard kit as well, just so i wont have to scratch build EVERY internal detail again. Butchering...ahem, improving the Academy kit will be work enough! Tongue

Personally I'm not familiar enough with the MiG-21 in detail to be able to comment on the accuracy of drawings; I've been satisfied with these ones, so far:
http://www.airwar.ru/other/draw/mig21-2.html

There was a pretty detailed thread on ARC or Britmodeller regarding the MiG-21 and (IIRC) the pros and cons of the various 1/48 Eduard releases; if I find it again (ARC seems to be out of commission at the moment), I'll post a link if you haven't seen it already.

This might be the thread I was thinking of; however, be warned - it's 54 pages long!
http://s362974870.onlinehome.us/forums/air/index.php?showtopic=193498&st=0

And of course, Scalemodels.ru's post-1950 forum is also a good place, although, surprisingly, I don't see a pinned MiG-21 thread, except for one about the 1/100 scale Plastikart kit:
http://scalemodels.ru/modules/forum/viewforum_f_44.html

You've probably already seen lots of on-line walkarounds, I assume!

Dully downloaded and saved, much appreciated!

I think that was the one i was looking for, no worries about threadnought size, can cope!  Wink

As for online walkarounds, you bet! After collecting a sizable amount of photos (both of real aircraft, and well made models to compare), i realized i had quite enough to go on - remember, this was my first construction after a long period during which i had nothing whatsoever to do with modeling, so mainly wanted it to look 'busy', rather than XX,X% accurate!

Goes without saying of course that when (not "if") i start building another one, regardless of type and scale, i will use every resource available to make it as close to the real thing as possible.

Oh boy! That's a goldmine !!!  Shocked Shocked Shocked

Appears to have pretty much every aspect of the aircraft covered! Cheers!

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. If I ever get really serious about the MiG-21, I'd definitely want a copy myself.
