I haven't seen this one - I'll have to pick it up.  For what it's worth, I enjoyed their book on Polikarpov aces (I-15, I-153, I-16).  Of course, as with seemingly every book on the GPW VVS, I'm sure their colour profiles are not to be completely trusted.  I'll let you know more, of course, if I do obtain it.  I wonder if our resident expert on the MiG-3, Mr. Massimo, has seen this book.

Regards,

Well, the Russian author kinda got my hopes high...
After all, the Polikarpov and LaGG & Lavochkin book were not that bad... Certainly an epic step forward from the infamous
"Soviet Aces" book...

I guess we'll know more after January 24, when the book becomes available; for what it's worth, Khazanov has co-authored numerous books with Yefim Gordon, so he's at least a familiar name.

Mig-3 aces? Were there really enough of them for a book? Sounds a bit like part of that old joke wth "the shortest books in the world", being "Famous Italian war heroes of WWII", "Encyclopedia of German jokes" and "the British Kama Sutra"... Got to admit that it is the most beautiful plane to come out of the 40ies, though.

Hi all,
I am very interested to see the book. To tell the truth, I can't imagine which aces are they referring too. I hope to have not to see the famous yellow 5 of Pokryshkin, that has never been documented by photos and is probably a fruit of fantasy.

Hi Massimo! I thought that too - the first thing I did was to look carefully at the cover artwork that Warhawk posted to make sure it wasn't "Yellow 5"!  Cheesy

Go here for a preview of some of the pages of the book - no colour plates, but one of the pages that is posted describes 6 or 7 of the profiles:

Profile 3 - http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/mig3/white36.html
Same aircraft, but without the black nose and tip of the fin as shown by Massimo. Pilot A. Kubyshkin.

Might be partly correct, as far the tail fin is concerned. It does look on the photo to be of a different shade, might be darker (repainted) green instead of black, Massimo also leaves it open to speculation : "painted overall green, with repaintings with gloss black on the nose, wing roots and, probably, tail". As for the nose section, could be only the spinner and cowling area are black, rest of the plane being green.

Profile 9 - http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/mig3/rough1.html
Same aircraft, but with white numeral 1 on rudder, white trim tab, and white tip on spinner instead of red. No round yellow marking on fin above the numeral. Pilot I. Dolzhenko.

I think this one is wrong, on the photo the 'white' parts mentioned are way too dark for that color, don't look dark enough to be red, so i think yellow is the safest bet. The spinner tip is not very visible, but again, i doubt it'd be white, most likely either red, or yellow as well.

Profile 16 - http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/mig3/42.html
Same aircraft, but with bort number in solid white, not red/white outline. Pilot A. Nikitin.

As i have examined this particular photo quite hard, exactly because i ended up building that very aircraft in scale, i think the book is wrong about it.

As Massimo also notes, the bort number does indeed seem to have a lighter border and darker center, which would make it white/red : "the white 42 seems to have a darker inner part, that could be red as the red star (that appears very light on the photo) ".
