Hi I'm interesting in the Luis Lavin story...
He his still alive and I want to try to speak with him

during the spanish civil war when fachist troops won in the northern front and came in the basque country. people ware so afraid that they send 3000 childs from three months to 10 years in boats toward CCCP...
a few of them will see they parents anymore....
Luis Lavin was one of those child. He left Bilbao  in 14th of june of 1937 with 12 years old.
He grows in the youngs house n?13 near Kiev.
withother "spanish war childs"
In april of 1941 8 of them were admit in a military Fighter pilot's school.
later he went to superior aviation academy of Chkalov, in  Borisoglebsk (Voronez).

In July of 1942 in goes at war with the 286 IAP.

KL talks about this regiment in this link:

http://sovietwarplanes.com/board/index.php?topic=1239.0

konstantin, Iwill need you again  Wink

Of course I would like to mount his planes....

the first of them was an I-16:

"En julio de 1942 nuestra unidad, el 826 Regimiento, estaba en Povorino, cerca de Stalingrado . Form?bamos parte de la 36 Divisi?n A?rea de Caza. Vol?bamos el modelo m?s moderno de I-16"

in july of 1942 our unit the 186 IAP was in Povorino, near Stalingrad. we were part of the 36th fighter division . We flew with the more modern I-16."

Konstantin, remenber, the 286 is often say to have been in the leningrad front in summer of 1942...
You red and so wrote that: "At the end of October, regiment moved to Komendantskii airfield within the besieged Leningrad.  For the next 14 months regiment fought from the various Leningrad airfields."
It's true that old pilots can mix they remind, but he seems very accurate...

Before I called him and ask for his plane number (but not only that, because I know those details often don't mater for pilots) I would like to know how did the 286 IAP' I-16 look like...

I found two of them:

First the most famous of them, the plane:

The pics is taken in July 10, 1942, when Julian came in the 286 IAP

and the plane of squadron leader Tartachuk

but it is just a profil and I think we have to see a AMT4/AMT6 camo, and I have doubt about the yellow number...
interesting , both of them have the number behind the star , small and very closed to the tail...

Do you know with what pic was realized that profile ?
Do you know other I-16 of the 186 IAP?
I'm also interest of later plane of the regiment...

"Luego nuestro Regimiento 826 se fundi? con el 907 Regimiento de Caza de Operaciones Especiales, con el hice la guerra hasta el final.
Ya no est?bamos a la defensiva e ?bamos avanzando. En 1944 ten?a ya un avi?n bueno, un La-7 (7), con el morro pintado de blanco"

later our regiment with integrated in the 907 IAP, within I fought until the end of the war.
In 1944 we used to have good plane, a La-7, with the nose painted in white

if someone had pics of plane of the 286 and from 1944 the 907 IAP...

here some pics:

in 1945

Lavin's La-9 in post war before the red army eject the spanish pilot in 1949...
Lavin lives in spain today and he and hir wife are living in misery because they lost the russian pension , and neither basque or spanish governments pay him despite the promesses...

Hi Xan,
interesting story...

I could find only about Luis Lavin:

at Borisoglebskoe aviation school website - http://www.bvvaul.ru/profiles/2072.php
same at http://www.trip-pla.net/press/4/rubrics/4241/publication/4401/

twice mentioned at http://www.airwar.ru/history/av2ww/soviet/spane/spane.html - (Borisoglebskoe and "in 826 iap (of 101 iad) under the command of major Stolyar in 1944-45")

826 iap also mentioned here http://airaces.narod.ru/spane/spane_ka.htm

before Saratov, Lavin lived in Baku http://www.ourbaku.com/index.php5/%D0%98%D1%81%D0%BF%D0%B0%D0%BD%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%B5_%D0%BB%D0%B5%D1%82%D1%87%D0%B8%D0%BA%D0%B8_%D0%B2_%D0%BD%D0%B5%D0%B1%D0%B5_%D0%91%D0%B0%D0%BA%D1%83

This comes from Merono's memoirs ("again in combat") http://www.modernlib.ru/books/merono_fransisko/i_snova_v_boy/read_11/

In another Merono's book, Lavin is mentioned as being in combats in Hungary in 1944 flying La-5 - http://militera.lib.ru/memo/other/merono/13.html

http://www.lipetsknews.ru/print.php?cat=smi&id=1079 mentiones that Lavin was in 591 iap.

Hi Xan,
Lavin was in 826 iap PVO (826 fighter regiment of Air Defence , not Front Aviation).

Quote
"En julio de 1942 nuestra unidad, el 826 Regimiento, estaba en Povorino, cerca de Stalingrado . Form?bamos parte de la 36 Divisi?n A?rea de Caza.

Facts:
- from end of 1941 to june 1943, 826 iap was part of 101 iad PVO (fighter division)
- from Feb 1944 to the end of war 826 iap was part of 36 iad PVO

- in 1942-43 defence of Voronezh and Kursk
- in 1944-45 defence of Kiev

Quote

in July 1942 the main task was defence of the railroad Baloshovo-Povorino-Stalingrad...

...in May 1943, 907 iap ON (fighter regiment of Spec Purpose) with Yak-7B and La-5 (airfield Kursk-East) was included in 101 iad.

Everything fits... far from Leningrad  Undecided and 286 iap  Embarrassed and their black-green I-16s... Lips Sealed

Hi Xan,  Smiley

If you are going to call or meet Luis Lavin, you should take opportunity and make an interview.  The results will largely depend how you prepare for the interview.

1.  Check interviews posted on this website http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/pilots/pilots.htm ? there is a set of standard questions that works well with the veterans.  FPSOlkor could provide those questions?

2.  Ask Lavin more about events and people, not technical details (not about the differences between I-16 ?Types?!).
  I would suggest following questions:
-   Looks that Lavin was wounded in 1943; ask him about the circumstances
-   Ask did he fly during Kursk Battle in July 1943
-   Ask about 907 iap ON commander Gavril Vlasovich Didenko.  Didenko was an ace with 26 victories (+37 shared victories!) from over 400 combat flights.  On July 02, 1943 Didenko scored 4 victories + 9 shared victories in 6 combat flights!
-   Ask about Aleksey Stepanovich Trepalin: in September 1942, as 581 iap commander he was accused for leaving combat in which the group he escorted had lost 4 Il-2s and 3 Yak-1s.  For this he was demoted from the rank of mayor, but not only that he wasn?t shut; he became 826 iap commander?
-   Ask about Lavin?s years in Saratov ? was he connected to Factory 292 or he was in Air Defence?
-   Ask for his opinion ? how was he treated, why rejected from the Air Force?

3.   of course, ask about individual planes, their tactical markings, numbers and colours
4.   Please, record every word!!!

Good luck / Suerte!

I-16 n.61 is very interesting. Does anyone know if there are any photos available?

Only available image of Tatarchuk's I-16 is

Fuselage No 61 comes from ICM boxart and decal sheet.  ICM clearly identifies this I-16 as a 286 iap plane flown by Tatarchuk in spring(?) 1942

ICM's interpretation is highly improbable!  They are suggesting pre-war scheme (solid green and red stars on wing tops) for mid-1942!!!
Following models are result of the confusion created by ICM

Hi Konstantin,
I don't think that the plane of the profile can be identified with the one of the photo. This picture depicts a type 24 or later with the door on the right side too, not a type 18 as on the profile; besides, the position of the star is different. I can't say if another photo or description of Tatarchuk's plane exists or it's a fantasy.
