Looking for information on the various I-16s flown by him. I have 'White 51" type 28 purportedly flown by him to achieve 10 victories from July to October [according to the very nice Begemot decal sheet] for the I-16. Is "White 51" correct for his plane or applied later with another unit. Also any other info on any of his other I-16s would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Research about Safonov's I-16 appeared in 2003 "aviamaster"magazine.  You will have to use translator:

According to photocor E. Haldei, this is also Safonov's I-16

Thanks gentlemen. It is difficult to discern the markings on the photograph. Any conjecture? SO at this point and perhaps never, we do not have a definitive idea on what plane was 'his'. The Bergemot decals have it as white 51 on the fuselage. Erik P has it as white 51 on the tail with patriotic slogans on port and starboard sides. And of course the white 11 which I believe was erroneously tagged to him through period photos and further perpetrated by the Aeromaster decals.. So perhaps I should look to another ace who flew the type 24 or 28. But I sure would like to know since I have spent frustrating hours digging through the Internet.
