Massimo - I like your conclusions on the airwarfare forum. It appears these P-40's were converted using components salvaged from various LaGG-3 aircraft. The multiple-view drawing shows what looks like a late LaGG-3 spinner and prop, for example, while the example in the photo has an early spinner. In the photo, the unpainted sheetmetal on the side of the cowling seems to be a "patch", where it was modified to compensate for the higher thrust line location (and therefore exhaust stack position) of the swapped-in Klimov engine; likewise, the plate below the smaller early LaGG-3 spinner is a filler to compensate for this and for the larger nose of the P-40E (compare a 1/72 LaGG-3 spinner with a 1/72 P-40E spinner regarding diameter). The drawing also shows three bulges in the top of the cowling, probably made necessary by the higher position of the Klimov engine in order to clear the front of the cylinder banks or rocker covers and other engine fittings. This thread on the other forum is very interesting - I'm just waiting for my membership application to be confirmed! John (and Ashleigh) Thompson

Hi, I see that you have examined the photos very carefully. I hope that some more images will emerge. Maybe one can make a model or a small page on this... Massimo

I admit it - I went and dug out a Hasegawa 1/72 P-40E, with just such a project in mind, for some later date. Heaven knows, I have lots of spare LaGG-3 spinners and exhausts laying around from Toko kits that I robbed for La-5 wing conversions... John Thompson

Hi, I've those pieces too. That kit is a mine of optional parts. Only, I have built an Academy P-40E, and I am not satisfied with its shape. I wonder if the Hasegawa is identical. Massimo

Massimo Looking again at the artwork on airwarfareforum, (and assuming the artwork is correctly based on photos), it appears possible that engines/spinners came from Yak aircraft, too. I still think the spinner shown in the multiple-view line drawing looks like one from a late LaGG-3, but the artwork examples (which one would use to finish a model) are not so definite. The Hasegawa kit is not the same as the Academy one. I believe the Hasegawa is generally more accurate, although there's something about the shape of the rudder that looks a bit odd. Haven't compared it to drawings yet, though. But it's the better of the two kits, as far as I know. John Thompson
