This is the 1/48 Zvezda La-5. It's the first Zvezda kit I've built, and I'm pretty impressed with it. It has a very detailed interior, and the exterior detailing is nice too. Decals are from Print Scale, Lavochkin La-5, Pt. I (#48-018). The decals worked very well. They have some very minor registration issues in places, but I'll use them again. The markings are for a Spanish pilot who flew for the VVS. I thought it was interesting to see the slogan on the side in Spanish rather than Russian. Paints are Akan.

The fit of the kit is pretty good, though it is a bit fiddly in places. But just test fit and there aren't any problems.

Hi jonbius,
unfortunately, Spanish slogan is most likely fiction made up by a profile artist.  For what I remember, it's even grammatically incorrect...
Black outlined red stars are also incorrect for 1943.

Happy modelling,

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

Hi,

Massimo, something like "Viva la revoluci?n socialista en SSSR". On some profiles written also in azbuka. However, I did not find anywhere photo of the real plane.

Jonbius, now that plane looks quite clean;) I like those subtle yellowish scratches. Very nice.

Thanks everyone!

@Jonbius

I usually don't show much in the way of internal detail. I build to sell my stuff on Ebay, to help pay for family medical bills, so everything is focused on quick finishes. Maybe one day when we are past this time, I'll build one with all the detail showing.

You noticed! Smiley Yeah, I did that one just to show I could make one a little cleaner. I'm still not entirely happy with the scratches, but I think they sort of get the point across. LOL Cheesy I used a Prismacolor pencil for that, and just sort of randomly "bounced" the point of it around while holding the pencil by the opposite end.

@Jonbius
I think by bouncing your pencil by holding it at the other way hasen't the effect of much control.
Just take it in your hand like you hold a pencil and make little dots and when making that dot just move the pencil a little.
It will hav the appearance of a little scratch. I do this all the time with my silver pencil.

Jon,
That is simply gorgeous.  Did you freehand the topside camo or did you use masks?

That's actually how I did it initially, and it just didn't look quite right to my eye. I too use my silver pencil the way you described. With the yellow color though, the marks were just to large for my tastes, and looked a bit odd. So I tried the bounce. I'll keep working on it though. I've got an idea for using oil paints and a cat whisker, actually. (Not pulled out from the cat, of course, but one it has shed naturally. Smiley )

Thanks! It's freehand. I do the lighter color first, then freehand the darker color. After that, I use a very thin mix of the first color, and carefully do some "edge corrections" to clean it up. It generally produces good results.

What is the grammar error?

This particular La-5 was discussed on this forum: http://sovietwarplanes.com/board/index.php?topic=411.0
The slogan should be:

"Viva la revolucion socialista en U.R.S.S."

Artist who made this profile (S. Vahrushev) is known for his inaccurate or totally fictional creations.

@Jonbius
Maybe the hairspraytechnique can do the thing?
I've airbrushed the scratches on the wing root of my Il-2.

Hadn't thought about the hairspray technique... that might be exactly what I need to try! Thanks for the idea!

Hey Massimo,

There are several tutorials if you Google "Hairspray Technique", but I like this video as it demonstrates it very well, albeit on armor.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CNFdEZnQN8

It's basically using a layer of of hairspray on top of one color, to allow a second color applied over the hairspray to be removed in a fashion that is very convincing, and looks excellent if done correctly.

@Massimo

1. First color like NMF
2. Clear coat. I use Tamiya.
3. Hairspray. Use this one thin layer. Wella Hairspray is the best for this. A club member had some testing with other hairsprays and Wella was the best.
4. Top camo
5. Use a stiff brush and damp in water. By making circles the hairspray disolves and the first color comes trough.
6. Clear coat

Some practice is needed but the results are far more realistic.
