I am trying to detail my Maquette 1/72 DB-3 kit, and read online that the DB-3 was equipped with the Nazarov M-87 9 cylinder engine. If you do a Google search for Nazarov M-87, it automatically redirects you to the Tumansky M-87, which is a double bank 14 cylinder engine. Searching for that in 1/72 scale comes up with the Vector 1/72 Gnome-Rhone GR 14K/N, M-85/87/88 Engine. I don't think that will work for me. Is there another 9 cylinder engine that is similar, that I can find in 1/72 scale aftermarket, or should I just search my spare parts box for any 1/72 scale 9 cylinder engines that will fit?  Huh

I figure if I get started on this kit, and get far enough along, then Xuntong will release a 1/48 DB-3M, not the DB-3F they have planned.  Cheesy

You have got some unreliable information....

Engine designations didn't include designer's name.  There was no such thing as Nazarov M-87 or Tumanski M-87. There was only one M-87 14 cylinder engine which was developed from the French Gnom-Rhone 14 engine.

Designation DB-3M is dubious; it appears in Shavrov's book published in 1970es.  In more recent literature (Kotelnikov) it is explained that designation DB-3M was initially (and very shortly) used for DB-3F (later re-designated as Il-4).  If you are modeling a DB-3 which was made in 1939, which had M-87 engines and larger pilot's canopy, that version was designated as "DB-3B" or "DB-3 Modernization B" or "DB-3 model 1939"

I am trying to do the last profile on this page:

http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/db3-il4/tapanidb3/db-13story.htm

It is DB-13 as it appeared after the spring 1942, up to 1944. Which engine type would that aircraft have used?

When made in 1939 and during the Winter War this plane definitively had M-87A.  Smiley
Correct designation for this plane would be "DB-3B 2M-87A"

I have no info about the engines it may have had while in FAF service...

Gentlemen,

VP-13 was fitted early 1941 with an M-87A (left) and an M-87B (right). I don't know what the engines were after it was overhauled after German loan. Also starting from late 1942 at least some of the Finnish DB-3's were fitted with the M-88's.

Cheers,

AaCee
