I am in the planning stages of doing a kit if a Mig-19S that was a part of an unknown Russian Aerobatic Team. I am seeing different resources/opinions on the undersides. Some resources are appearing as silver, one source say it's a mixture of Humbrol 115 Russian Blue mixed with Humbrol 34 Flat White. That being said I'm guessing it's more like Duck Egg Blue undersides? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
unfortunately I haven't photos. My guess is to exclude all colors, as duck egg green or light blue, that can make the plane scarcely visible when in flight, because it's the contrary of what an aerobatic team needs.

Hi,
the image gives really the idea of blue, but it is poor. I don't see metallic reflections. If it is blue, I suggest a saturate shade.
MiG-15s and 21 show metallic undersurfaces. The MiG-17 seem even black.
I think that it's better to ask on a Russian forum, if possible.

Yeah I agree. The more I think and look at the pics and reference pic from Wings Pallette site, I'm convinced it's blue grey undersides or more so Dark Ghost Grey at best.

Which Russian forum would you recommend?

If you don't write Russian, it will be a bit difficult to post something, even if I think that someone could read English and answer all the same.
Again, my opinion is against blue-grey or dark grey for an aerobatic team, unless proven.

I'd suggest same underside finish as the standard fighter, which was varnish with aluminium powder, not natural metal.

these are Mig -15's, but AFAIK the finish on the MiG-17 was the same



note different colour of airbrake, and the silver outline to the fuselage star.

The MiG-15 entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1949.

The external surfaces, unprimed, were painted with a silver color named 170, that demonstrated scarcely durable and peeled off, besides it required hot drying and so was difficult to be repaired at unit level.

In 1951, they changed it with the trasparent varnish 9-32, that was more resistant and didn't require hot curing. This varnish could be completely trasparent or slightly yellowish.

If addictioned with 6% aluminium powder, they obtained the 9-32Al aluminium paint.

This product was operationally tested in late 1950 with satisfactory results, and was adopted during the following year. So, Soviet metallic planes as the MiG-15 and Il-28 could have been both natural metal (varnished) or painted silver.
