Note the red star on the upper wing.  I thought that this didn't happen?

It is unusual, but I've another photo of wartime Pe-2 with these stars.

Below, a Pe-2 series 205 of 40 GvBAP, Black Sea Fleet, in 1945. The slogan Za velikogo Stalina means for the Great Stalin, and has been seen on other planes of the same unit. Note the Guards emblem on the nose. Here I don't see the stars. but the white bands look the same.

Massimo

That is indeed interesting. I believe Stalin/Molotov's Pe-8 transport had stars on the upper wings, but I don't recall seeing a photograph after 1941 of a warplane with them. I know I've never seen a post-1941 Il-2 with them (I'm not talking about postwar, just GPW).

Hi Jason

For soviet types, yes, very unusual, but they are common on many lend- Lease types, especially British ones, as they were applied before delivery.
The US types seem more likely to have the one upperwing star overpainted though, depending on their delivery markings.

Yes, of course, Troy. I wasn't remembering the L-L types. Didn't the Spitfire Mk.VB's being repainted at Abadan have the overwing stars?

Jason
