Hey guys!

I found a photo of this Spitfire mkVb over the Kuban region. Is there some info on this subject? Color,  and the arrow on it?

Check at http://lend-lease.airforce.ru/english/articles/spit/

"Merlin 46-engined Spitfire Vb of the 3rd Squadron of 57th GIAP during Kuban battle.
Photo submitted by C-F. Geust"

the plane was already discussed at this forum! If you search you'will find the thread...

The arrow was yellow, but it was scraped and repainted in gray.  Supposedly then new Spitfires were confused with German fighters and yellow arrow only added to the confusion.  Case was described in memoirs of 57 giap pilot.

regards,
KL

Good to see you back posting Konstantin

thread is here
http://sovietwarplanes.com/board/index.php?topic=477.0

also discussed here

ONe thing to note, despite many profiles showing overpainting of RAF Markings with VVS colours, almost all British supplied aircraft were supplied with red stars, so the RAF markings were painted out by the British, with British paint.  There are photos in Red Stars 4 showing the overpainting and application of the red star.
the below is part of a sequence of photos, but note the fresh paint just in front of the red star, where the RAF markings have been painted out, and also the upperwing star, but no tail star.

Photos of operational VVS Spitfires are rare, in Red Stars 4 it makes the point they were mostly issued to PVO (Air Defence) units, and as these were not in the front lines, they were harder to get permission to photograph.

Bort 538/EP210 has featured on the Emipire City decals sheet in 1/72nd and 1/48th,

and the Airfix Club 'Under the Red Star' set.
