Hello, Here is the first of the year. It was a small challenge to transform an I-16 type 10 from Ark Models to an I-16 type 5 with a resin kit for the Eduard model kit. But in the end, it went pretty well The resin kit is from R. Rodriguez Ramos, but only the nose was used for this build... I also added a A-Resin cockpit set (for Eduard). The subject is a well known aircraft flown by Lt Liu Chi-Sheng between February and May 1938. This aircraft was very probably a late type 5 but with an early canopy (from Squadron)... Regards Stéph. P.S.: thanks to Massimo and members of this website for their help and knowledge

Excellent model, Stéph! I like the weathering you've done, and the conversion to type 5 worked very well. By coincidence, I'm doing a type 5 conversion right now, but in 1/72 scale, using the Amodel UTI-4t15b kit. Crazy, but true...

Hi Steph, you've made a very good model. This is a typical Type 5 of 1937, apart for the Browning machine guns instead of ShKAS on the wings, a Chinese modification. I was looking at photos of them just today, I remember that someone on Scalemodels proposed that they were PV-1, but this weapon should have longitudinal vents on the manifold while Brownings have circular holes, and we see this on the historical photos. Does the resin kit include long ailerons? Regards Massimo

Thank you for your comments... John, I think to have a I-16 type 5 in the vitrine or on the shelf is something different But I made a mistake (sorry to R. Rodriguez Ramos), I lose my mind... So, I also used his fin, rudder, horizontal stabilizer and his ailerons... Oops... I think I forgot nothing... Regards Stéph

Hi Steph, have you changed the tail of the kit? What was wrong with the original? Regards Massimo

Hi, I've received a note from Andrey Averin: In China, all type 5s were sent with PV-1 machine guns and only a year later they were replaced with ShKAS. I attached a photo where both versions of the PV-1 are visible. So, there were also PV-1 with circular venting holes whose barrels resemble to those of the Browning. Regards Massimo

Hello Massimo, it was a bit too thick, especially the horizontal stabilizer. On the other hand the height was good unlike the Eduard kit which is a little too big (1,8mm). The R. Rodriguez Ramos transkit have also the right height. Regards Stéph

Wow - that's an excellent article; even if one doesn't read Spanish, the images are easily understood (Google Translate should help with the text!). Note that it's the second in a series about the I-16 and building the Eduard kit - links are at the bottom of the page. I bookmarked it for future reference, even in 1/72! Thank you, Stéph! John Edit - I tried it, finally - Google Translate actually does a very good job of translating from Spanish to English. I was surprised - it doesn't work quite as well for Russian to English!

Hi, the work of Rodriguez is excellent indeed. I knew it but perhaps I hadn't seen the page on the tail. Thank you. Massimo
