photo is from the "Krasnaya Zvezda" (Red Star) newspapers for March 23, 1936.  Text describes just finished N-127, as it looked before the flight tests. Colours and markings are described in following way:

Aircraft is painted in green and red colors. On its tail - the flag of the Arctic aviation. On wings and on the fuselage - white markings "SSSR N-127." Letter "N" means that the aircraft is designed for Arctic flights.

After it completed its mission, N-127 returned to Moscow on May 21, 1936.  "Pravda" reporter L. Hvat describes N-127 landing in following words"

"Dark green plane, shining in the sun, is landing"

Vodopianov's description in my previous post, is from his book published in 1937, so we are not talking about the memoirs written decades after the expedition.

HTH,
KL

Interesting.
Anyway, the fact that it doesn't mention the undersurfaces is not necessarily indicative.  We often write about green/black, overall green, grey/grey planes without mentioning the light blue undersurfaces.
Green and blue has to have been the factory standard as R-5s, then the red bands were added (on N-127 only?).

Vodopiyanov mentiones blue undersides:

Wings and fuselage undersides were painted in light blue, while fuselage sides and wings top were painted in green

This would be the standard VVS scheme. In all three descriptions upper surfaces are described as "green" and in two the plane was described as "shiny/glossy".

Photo below shows boundary between the light blue and red colour on top wing

Hi,
can you confirm that red bands were on 127 only?

Hi Alex!

It looks that all known photos of N-127 had been taken in March 1936, just before two planes left Moscow...

N-127 was probably also photographed in May when it returned to Moscow and in October when it was publicly displayed. If interested in this plane, you may find more in old newspapers etc.  Smiley

cheers,
KL
