Any basis of fact for this profile?
Seems very unlikely.

Hi,
strange a lot.
I suppose that it could be based on some recalls of veterans, but why? Perhaps for some training unit, far from the frontline?
Regards

The top of picture shows that this scheme is personally signed and confirmed by I. A. Nikolayenko.
While I do not know who this pilot is, the "salmon-ish" shade of the color in the profile leads my eye towards a faded red (with a brand new, un-faded spinner) maybe?

Translated a couple of links that has some information about the squadron. Looks like this was a front line group not a training squadron.

Perhaps it was painted pink in the training stage, then changed when arrived into the operative unit. But why to move an obsolete plane from a training unit to a frontline squadron in mid 1942, when the unit had more modern planes? Perhaps this was his plane while training only?

This profile and everything around it was created by A.V. Stankov in 2005. Regardless of the huge amount of information and material he collected from the veterans, Stankov is known as extremely unreliable source, kind of Russian Pilawskii.
Until we see what and where A.I. Nikolaenko said about the "pink I-16" i would not consider this profile as something based on reality.

Aerobatic I-16 which ended in a combat unit in 1942 was mentioned in A.R. Popov memoirs "V nebe Stalingrada" ("in Stalingrad Sky") published in 1985. This veteran says that his plane was originaly red, flown by famous Anatoliy Serov, but it was overpainted in standard "Protective colour" (meaning military green). This sounds more realistic...

This is how Maslov describes Popov's recollections:

Quote
