Hello,

i am currently building Academy's Il-2 (single-seater) and would like to dress
it up as 'white 4', the seventh option on Academy's painting instruction.

Are the colors Dark Earth and Medium Green (AMT-1 or A-21m / AMT-4 ??) correct or
should it be Black instead of Dark Earth?
I am just a bit confused because there is no year mentioned. I've searched this side
but couldn't find 'white 4'.
Also, are there pictures, showing the rest of the camouflage scheme?

Any help is really appreciated.

Thank you!

Hello Massimo,

i found this scan in an online-shop:

http://www.mojehobby.pl/zdjecia/7/8/4/1540_2_aca12417_7.jpg

It is option no. 7 (unknown unit, rear part of the canopy painted).

I just wanted to do an Il-2 with the brown/black camo, so the options
no. 6 and 7 would do it for me.
Also these planes look to me like real workhorses without all these
slogans and so on :-)

Thank you for your help!

Hi Sanjuro,
to tell the truth, I haven't memory to have seen photos of this plane.
I suggest to look at this page, there is a wide choice of paintings and photos.
http://massimotessitori.altervista.org/sovietwarplanes/pages/il-2/il2-camo/il2-1942/il-2model1942.htm
Each small profile is linked to a wider 3-views drawing.
There are other pages on Il-2 linked here:
http://massimotessitori.altervista.org/sovietwarplanes/pages/il-2/il-2.htm
The colours should be green AMT-4 and black AMT-6, with undersurfaces light blue AMT-7, darker,  or AII light blue, lighter.

Thank you for your reply, Massimo.

I will go on studying the informations provided on your website.
At least i've learned so far that the academy-kit represents an Il-2 model 1942 with the
metal-wing. So, no filling of panel-lines.
Maybe i can find some suitable registration numbers to build an Il-2 with photographic
evidence.

Best regards

Hi Sanjuro,
please check if the rear of the fuselage has panel lines, I haven't the kit and I am not sure of this.
All the planes built in 1942 had wooden rear fuselage. Only a part of those built in 1941 had metallic rear fuselage.
Note that the type of wing is related to the factory, as the camouflage pattern and size of stars. Only planes built in factory 18 had metallic wings with balance horns at the wingtips, while those built in factory 1 and 30 had wooden wings without balances at the wingtips.

Hello Massimo,

the rear fuselage has panel lines as you can see in this kit-review:

http://www.finescale.com/product-info/kit-reviews/2008/10/academy-1-72-scale-ilyushin-il-2-shturmovik

I was thinking about building 'Red 4', but i noticed on your model_1942-side that it has no visible panel lines.
At least i can't see any.
The painting/decal instructions on the other hand correspond with your profile of 'Red 4'.

But there are balance-horns in the kit and also shown in the instructions as to be used on the outer wings sections.

So, do i have to fill the panel lines on the rear fuselage to do 'red 4'?

Thank you!

Hi,
you have to fill the lines on the rear of the fuselage to make nearly all Il-2s.
Metallic fuselages were used on part of the production in the first half of 1941 and during the summer, but the planes of 1941 had different wings and the modification of the wings is more difficult than filling the lines on the fuselage.

Okay, i will do that.
it seems that, once again, you shouldn't trust the information provided by the kit-maker.

Now i have to find some information about those reinforcement stripes on the wings.

Thank you very much for your help!

You're welcome.
To tell the truth, the type 1942 hadn't the balance weights under the ailerons, it had only those on the wingtips.
