Hi all,

for all interested, Russian M-Hobby magazine can be purchased for princely sum of .93 Eur/issue via their own Android application (look for it in Google Play store). There is a new series of articles on VVS colours, camouflage and markings.

At this time only the issues from year 2017 and 2018 are available.

"Stars on Wings" by Sergey Trufanov - evolution of VVS national markings (USSR)

12/2016 - from 1923-1928
01/2017 - 1928-1940
02/2017 - 1941-1943
03/2017 - 1943-1945
04/2017 - 1946-1973
05/2017 - 1973-1991

Camouflage of VVS aircraft in 1941 - experimental and unofficial camouflage by Mikhail Timin

07/2018
08/2018

Hi Vedran,
this is very interesting. To tell the truth I've to think how to pass informations from Android to Windows in a practical way, I am used to use my smartphone mainly as a phone.
Is there an easy way to obtain a translation of the articles?

Hi Massimo, it's possible to emulate Android on a PC. There are many software. I use NoxPlayer and it works fine with many apps.
To buy and download the M-Hobby issues, I have tried to install Quazarteam (the app) . Unfortunately, in this case, the app is used not only to read the issues, but also to pay them  and it must be installed on a smartphone.

Unfortunately I found no way to store and view the magazine outside the app.
An option for tablet users would be screenshots + OCR software.

On the shady side, there are pirated scans all around the internet.

Well, the saga has continued through issues 9-12/2018. The newest issue has an interesting tidbit.
Remember those aircraft with white fuselage bands and red stars in them? Pilot schools. How did I miss that?

What planes? LaGG-3s?

Righidan has started an automatic translation of these articles. I've received the first one.
We are still considering how to use them without creating too much copyright issues, considering that the publication is recent.

like this Vedran?

Many photos of German origin show Il-2s with white bands around the red stars on fuselage and wing undersurfaces. Probably all them belonged to the same unit.

Them all appear as the typical production of Zavod 18 of the summer 1941, with metal rear fuselage, metal wing of 1941 and canopy with reduced armor. The only new constructive characteristic we see is the thin sheet cover over the gap between spinner and cowling.

This one was c/n 1834612.

Hi Troy,

posted with fair use etc. As I am a bit rusty with my Russian, the bottom I-16 and the Po-2 are from the flight schools according to captions,

the LaGG, Il-2 and Pe-2 are not captioned as such. I'm not finished yet with the whole article.

Dear Vedran,
on the image that you post, on the left, corresponding to page 50 of M-Hobby of January 2019, I-16 346 is a plane of the 36th IAP, while the I-16 6 and the Po-2 scheme are for flying schools.
On the right, page 51, the LaGG 3, the Il-2 and the Pe-2 are not school aircraft, but represent the use of rapid identification markings in the airplanes in the North-Western Front in mid-August 1941.
Inspired by Massimo, I have translated all the captions of all the images of the seven articles by Mr. Timin, and I will begin tomorrow to post them one at a time, hoping to be useful to all the members of this forum.

Hi Daniele,
your translations will be greatly welcomed.   Thank you for your effort.

Hi Vedran,
Just some notes on the images of this scan (I haven't yet examined these highly interesting articles in deep way):
About the Pe-2 drawn on the page: the small photo seems to show that the white band was under the wings too, differently from the drawing.
About I-16 n.6: the white band on the  fuselage  seems oblique on the photo. Besides the profile should show the lack of the doors of the landing gear.
Not to despise this great research, of course.

Dear Daniele,

thank you for your efforts.

Hi Massimo,

yes, the profiles can be iffy as always, photo is still the king.

On his VK page Mikhail announced that his M-Hobby series is being turned into a book!

He also shared a bit of information about the polychrome Lagg-3, of which 5 actually received the trial schemes. LaGG-3 No31213-78 saw combat around Moscow out of Kubinka airfield, flown by Sokolov Grigory Maksimovich who died in combat on July 21, 1941.
