Looking through some of the great artwork here, I noticed a comment/caption mentioning a metal wing without the aileron balances. Any info as to when, or on which later version they were dispensed with? I was under the impression that a wing showing no balance was wood.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,
early Il-2 of 1941 had a metallic wing with metallic ailerons with two balances under them, plus two balances in front of the leading edge. The most part of Il-2 was built in Factory 18.
In late 1941, the balances under the ailerons (metallic of fabric-covered) were suppressed, while the frontal ones were preserved for the metallic wings that were modified with a different dispositin of the weapons.
In spring 1942, factory 1 and 30 started producing Il-2s with wooden wings and without any visible balance, while factory 18 continued to produce metal wings with balances on the leading edge.
