Hi,
while correcting the plant view of early type MiG-3 for the booklet, I made a comparison
between drawings and photos.
By sure the horizontal tail plans of early and late variants are different: the
division line between stabilizator and elevator is nearly straight on early
type MiG-3, while it is strongly curved on late type.
The tip of late type has a major chord than on early type.
From photos, the angle of leading edge of both variants looks identical.
I remember that Arsenyev wrote about an extension of the elevator.

On the whole, I think that the elevators of late type were more extended
rearwards than the elevators of early type.
The drawing of Voronin should be accurate for late type, so early type
should have shorter chord elevators and nearly straight division line.

The interpretation of the drawings of the Polish monograph Migy Stailna
looks wrong (they extended forward the stabilizator of late type) even if
they have the merit to be the first magazine to show difference on this
respect between the two types.

I fear that it's a bit difficult to understand without illustrations. I'll make some sketches as soon as I can.
Massimo
