Hello:

I can?t remember if this topic was discussed before,I?ve made a search but nothing came out.So,I would like to know if anyone have seen a photo of this Klimov engined P-40 two seater:



I would like to make one of these re-engined Kittyhawks as it?s an interesting modelling subject.This is the only photo I have:

It?s from Osprey "Soviet Lend -Lease aces" book.

HI Martin

AFAIK the pic you posted is the only pic of a Klimov P-40 that has been published in the west.  

The profile you show looks like it is captioned in Czech(or maybe Slovak) , so probably from a Czech publication, so maybe try find where it was published, as there might be a photo in the book or magazine the profile is from?

By a member here, Michael_XIII, I PM him about the markings, asking about the scheme, 'red 20'


he said red 20 was a "Profile was printed in old russian avia magazine and migrated to any known source about this plane. I don't seen real photo with it - only a profile"

I have not seen this profile, I intend to do a Klimov P-40 at some point so a 2 seater would be an interesting build in this scheme.

For your information, gentlemen, LF do both the single-seater and the two-seater Klimov-powered P-40's.  Here's the link to the two-seater version - http://www.lfmodels.com/curtiss-p40ea-double-seat-klimov-p-38.html.  Here's the link to the single-seater - http://www.lfmodels.com/curtiss-p40e-klimov-p-44.html.  I bought the single-seater version and it's actually quite nice.  It appears to have been based on the Hasegawa model, although done in resin.  I've built the kit, and painted it, but I've never gotten around to decalling it.  Once I do, I'll post the pictures on this site.  As far as the two-seater, some profiles have the colour scheme as being white and green bands, where at least one has the bands as white and blue!  I would think white and green would be more probable.

John, that third profile, for Red 26, is actually an Allison-powered P-40K (I once went through a P-40 phase before I descended into my terminal IL-2 madness, and actually did a little bit of research into the Soviet P-40's).  I've seen a photograph of it, which shows the starboard wing to possibly, even probably be in olive drab, as here, but the stabiliser as white.  Although not a Klimov-powered version, it's an interesting bird and I've partially built a Smer (ex-InTech) P-40K to do as this particular aircraft.

Troy,as far as I can remember,the two seater profile is from a MBI book and there?s no photo of a Klimov engined P-40.As a matter of fact,Michael_XIII?s build was my inspiration to make the conversion to a Klimov engined bird.Thanks for the links.

I think no.
There are at least two famous profiles of MiG-3, reported on nearly every source, whose original photos are still unknown. I suspect that at least some of them are fruit of fantasy.
