813 IAP, 215 Red banner IAD

The photo is captioned as shot in winter 1944/45

The big emblem on the side is the red banner order.

Note that the canopy looks repaired with adhesive tape.

According to Vaklamov (via Misos66): "Red engine cowling and spinner were introduced by Lieutenant-General A.S. Osipenko in July 1944 before the Bobruisk Operation as the recogniotion marks of the Air Corps (8 iak). At the same time, identification marks of the regiments were accepted."

813 iap was part of 8 iak, as 156 iap. So, it is likely that the noses were painted red in the very same way. At that time, the regimentl mark was a white band passing around the fuselage.

The wide red star on the fuselage suggests that the plane was built in Zavod 381.

The sides of the fuselage were repainted in one color (green AMT-4 or grey AMT- 11) in very rough way, deleting the white band that remained only barely visible. The darker area around the canopy could be the original AMT-12 of the camouflage.

The cowling looks too light to be red, if compared to the red stars and to the red parts of the emblem. Perhaps it was repainted into a different light color, possibly white as the deleted band on the fuselage. The picker of Photoshop shows that the darkness of the visible part of nose is comparable to the white of the number and of the outline ogf the star.

This profile shows, according tho the informations above and to the use, the likely look of plane 63 before the (devastating) repainting shown on the photo.

The white band on the fuselage, typical of 813 IAP Lavochkins in 1944 and perhaps 1945, seems still vaguely visible on the photo above.

The fonts drawn here are typical of Z 381 produced planes, as the wide red stars visible on the photo.

The nose is represented as that of 156 iap of the same 8 iak.

This profile tries to represent plane 63 as it appears on the photo:

  • - the white band was deleted;
  • - the original number was repainted with different fonts (deformed fonts of z.21, probably with rough masks made on the field); original 3 seems somewhat visible under the repainting;
  • - the obvious, rough repainting was supposed made with grey AMT-11 to justify the dark frames and part around the canopy and the red banner badge as unrepainted AMT-12 and extends over the original AMT-7 light blue part of fuselage in front of the stabilizers;
  • - part of the cowling was repainted with a lighter shade, possibly lighter red, orange or yellow.
