The Underwing Charges

The RPM kit includes 6 rockets and rails; the rockets are out-of register and can’t be recovered, but there are 8 good rockets in the Toko LaGG-3 kit.

The rails and supports could be improved by separating them, correcting the supports and rejoining the rails with a small cylindrical connections. It should be relatively easy, but I think that the result would be too frail and so I have left the idea for my model.

The Part photoetched set has rocket wings and rails that should solve the problem for a 1/72 model.

Another possible change is a couple of underwing pods with 12.7 mm UBS guns. These weapons were not widely used because they affected the aircraft performance.

Any type of MiG-3 might show this installation; the rectangular panel under this type of wing is for ammunition storage.

The 1/72 MiG-3 from Emhar has 2 resin underwing pods with an incorrect shape; they should be extended beyond the wing leading edge.

 The MiG-3 could carry up to 4 bombs = 200kg (2 x FAB-100 or 4 x FAB-50); another 200kg (2 x FAB-100 or 4 x FAB-25) could be switched for rockets.

I have not any certain photo or information about the MiG-3's use of bombs; this photo shows a bomb near a MiG-3, but it is not sure that the bomb was for this aircraft.
