Red 42 was probably photographed in winter or 1941/42 or in the early spring
1942. According to M. Bykov, it is of 12 oiae (squadron) KBF.
His characteristics are:

late type with slats- equipped wings;
-
overall white (the dark shades visible on the photo on the rear fuselage
are probably defects of print, they extend on the star and perhaps on the
background);

a small red star on the white propeller;
-
alluminium propeller blades, probablywith black backface;
-
red 42 number on the rear fuselage, near the star; the fuselage star and
part of the number look unusually light, but it is probably a light reflex;
-
probably retractable tail wheel;
-
absence of sliding canopy and radio;
-
inert gas pipe on the left exhaust stacks.
