The subject od this profile is the example red 85, that appears magnifying
two famous photos shot on March 7 1942, when the 120 IAP of the Moscow
Air Defence (PVO) was made a Guards Regiment as 12 Gv.IAP as a
reward for its merits.
The aircraft is only marginally visible beyond red 39.
The characteristics look to be:
-
late type, probably with slats;
-
overall dark white with visible traces of the underlying summer camouflage,
particularly on the nose;
-
green canopy struts;
-
a red band on the spinner;
-
probably white propeller blades;
-
red 85 number (at first glance it seemed an 83, but a better observation
seems to show an 85 with the 5 in higher position than the 8; the shade
of grey is exactly as the red star, but one can suspect it is black because
it contrasts more than the red 39 and red 90 codes on surrounding aircrafts);
-
a clean white band on the top of rudder;
-
probably fixed tail wheel with tissue cover;
-
underwing rockets.
