Title: Early IL-2 lower wing
Post by: nsmekanik on May 04, 2020, 02:36:18 PM
I am working on Academy's Il-2 single seat, found here https://ww2aircraft.net/forum/threads/gb-46-1-72-il-2-ww2-eastern-front-twin-engine-a-c-transports-and-gliders.53541/ (https://ww2aircraft.net/forum/threads/gb-46-1-72-il-2-ww2-eastern-front-twin-engine-a-c-transports-and-gliders.53541/) , and I'm planning to use the kit decals to do white 19 of 174 ShAP. As I need to backdate the wings to the early version is there any good pics and/or drawings of the wings undersides? Also interested if there is any more information about this plane.

Does this help? Not the best drawing for wing underside details, but maybe it's enough. If not, let me know, and I'll keep looking.

Hi,
wing model 1941... this is from a book of Rastrenin

I've seen your AM half-built. For inside colors, don't worry, it could be that it was repainted in some maintenance session. A lot of unexpected colors have been seen inside Soviet planes.

Regards
Massimo

Thank you Gentlemen, very much appreciated  :)

Is there any information as to where  174 ShAP was in the end of October in 1941?

Thanks Massimo, when I get to it I think I will finish it as silver? 94 that's in the profiles, as I have the Errormaster decals for it, the 94 will be white though as that's what they are on the sheet.

So is it a wing with larger guns that has the asymmetric shell ejection ports?

Hi,
larger guns? No, they are smaller: 20 mm ShVAK instead of the 23 mm VYa of later types.

I strongly suspect that the waste shells and links slots are drawn wrongly. They don't resemble what we see on ShVAK-armed I-16s.  I had a look to photos but found few.

To have an idea, please see the drawings of the I-16, keeping in mind that the guns on I-16 protruded much more than on the Il-2; on I-16, the waste links were expelled from a small tube aside the barrel, on Il-2 this could be replaced by a tube expelling them from a circular, oval or rectangular small slot. and always on the same side of the barrel.

Hi Massimo,

I just assumed a later plane would be up-gunned with one with a larger bore.  Anyway, is that drawing above correct
as to the ejection chutes?  I can't recall where I saw plans with the asymmetric ports, and this fire tablet I'm forced to use doesn't search well; or maybe it's just me?

Thanks,
Jim

I don't think that the drawing of Il-2 is correct, I think that there is a more or less square hole and a smaller hole in front of it. The long slot of the drawing doesn't seem confirmed by photos or analogies with those of I-16.
