Any facts known about night units with black painted IL-2's? Seems unlikely to me based off of this profile from this book.

Il-2 was used at night for a brief period of time by only two squadrons - one at 35th ShAP VVS KBF (http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/pilots/batievskii/batievskii.htm)
other in 448 ShAP 281 ShAD 14th VA. There were some mentions about one or two more squadrons somewhere in the south, but they all were using Ils from the day-time units as extra load on machines an pilots. So no planes were overpainted for night use due to the fact that it was simply not needed.
Some regiments tried to train to fly Ils at night, for example 141 ShAP, but if i remember correctly, with no success.

Hi,
I think it's a fantasy or a misunderstandment of some photo. For what I remember, I've seen only a Ye-2 with full black finish, and after the war at the NII VVS for tests. There are some photos of Il-4s that could seem all black, but probably they had green bands too. Night bombers as Li-2s were camouflaged on the upper side.

I've seen that drawing of an all-black IL-2 in the old Profile book, but I think it's a fantasy.  I've never seen any photograph remotely resembling an all-black Shturmovik, or any mention of one in any references.  Pity, really, as it would make a great-looking model!

Regards,

Jason
