Red 1 of 5 IAP VVS KBF

This aircraft (serial n.2171) was piloted by Lieutenant N.M.Estyen of 5 IAP VVS KBF; he made a forced landing after being hit by AA fire near Utti air base in southern Finland on July 12, 1941.

Plane 2171 was a very early MiG-3, built at the end of December 1940 or in early January 1941.

Part of the wreck of this plane is still preserved in a depot of the Finnish Museum, still with the original colors. It shows the surprising dark red of the number and of the trim tabs of the rudder and of the right elevator, and the blue-green outline of the number 1. Some vague light blue paint halos are visible on the tail, probably due to small accidents while retouching the plane.

Surprisingly, the lower part of the rudder has a soft area that seems painted light grey instead of the usual green or a more likely light blue.

Blue 11 of 153 IAP

Left: the sad remains of MiG-3 (s/n 3115) that crashed on 13 July 1941 on the Shum airport, killing the pilot ml. lt. G.K.Eremenko of 2nd Squadron of 153 IAP, 3 IAD, Air Defence of Leningrad.

The plane is described as having a blue 11 on its rudder. On the photo, the colors are unrecognizable, but it is likely that the plane had the original factory livery, and the dark areas visible on the rudder are due to the shadow of the stabilizer and elevator.
