Left:

photos of a belly landed MiG-3 in winter 1941-42.

The camouflage is scarcely recognizable, but a number 1 with shade comparable to the red star is visible on both sides of the fin; on the right side, it seems positioned under the brace of the red star, in an higher and more rearward position than the left side.

The most interesting characteristic of this plane is the tail skid installed instead of the tail wheel. Unfortunately we don't know the unit and place where the plane was.

Probably the main landing gear was equipped with wheels, as usual.

Another unusual characteristic is the presence of the radio boxes under the rear glazing; although appearing on all drawings and all kits, these devices are extremely rare on photos.

Its characteristic seem to be:

  • late type MiG-3, probably with slats;
  • inert gas pipe on the left exhaust stacks;
  • equipped with full radio equipment;
  • equipped with tail skid, without tail wheel and its doors;
  • typical temperate black-green camouflage, with typical wartime positioning and size of red stars;
  • red 1 on both sides of the fin, on slightly asymmetrical positions.
