Photo from Batailles Aeriennes

A photo of first lieutnant A.Y.Fedorov of 28 IAP taken in winter 1941/42 near Moscow. This unit was part of 6 IAK (Fighter Air Corpus) of the PVO (Air Defence) of Moscow. http://ava.org.ru/iap/28pvo.htm

The aircraft is only partially visible, but we can read the code 5077 on the tail, that identifies it as the 3077th MiG built (the serial numbers of MiGs start from 2001) that was of the final production, so we can guess many of its characteristics even if not visible from the photo:

  • very late type, with slats and fixed tail wheel, as most examples in winter 1941/42;
  • probably armed with two synchronized weapons, UBS or ShVAK; the central slot could have been closed;
  • probably armed with rockets as most MiG-3s on the Moscow front during this period;
  • equipped with radio, at least the mast and receiver; probably it hadn't the boxes under the glazing that were rarely seen;
  • worn white winter paint on a standard camouflage, with light blue undersurfaces;
  • black 2 painted on the stabilizator; traces of a overpainted 2 well visible on the rudder;
  • red code 5077 painted both on the fin and the rudder.
