Red 42 was probably photographed in winter or 1941/42 or in the early spring 1942 in the Leningrad region. According to M. Bykov, it is of 12 OIAE (squadron) of KBF (Red Banner Baltic Fleet). The pilot was Lt N.P. Khromov
His characteristics are:

  • late type with slats-equipped wings;
  • white upper and side surfaces; it is not clear about the use of white on the lower surfaces, that could be painted with the old AII light blue that is markedly lighter than the newer AMT-7 light blue;
  • a small red star on the front of the white spinner;
  • red 42 number on the rear fuselage;
  • probably retractable tail wheel;
  • absence of sliding canopy and radio;
  • inert gas pipe on the left exhaust stacks.
