A Ukrainian defector flew this MiG-3 to Melitopol airfield on 3 December 1941, surrounding to Rumanian troops.

photo from Migi Stalina (restored)

The plane was remarked and flown by Rumanians.

Its characteristics look to be:

  • early type, without slats;
  • with radio;
  • painted green with light blue undersurfaces ( probably not uniform; on other MiG-3s, it looks that both colors on the metal parts are lighter than on the wooden ones);
  • on the rudder, we see a digit 2 and a small red star, painted perhaps with a lighter shade of red than the main stars;
  • light (blue?) pitot probe with silver end;
  • black outlined red stars on fuselage and wings undersurfaces (it is not cnown if the red stars on uppersurfaces, an early factory standard, were deleted or not);
  • silver propeller blades with partially black painted rear surface (as standard); the black paint is worn;
  • a metallic stripe covers the spinner-cowling junction;
  • there are metal sheet triangles near the oil coolers outlet flaps, as on late type MiG-3s.
On the right, we see a detail of the image before restoration.
